I don’t think we can discuss this debate as citizens, take stock of it as a country, without noting that this is certainly the first time one candidate has openly threatened to jail the other candidate. Trump said openly that he would instruct the Justice Department to open a new investigation of Clinton and that he’d make sure it ended with her imprisonment. That’s something we expect it kleptocracies and thin democracies where electoral defeat can mean exile, imprisonment or death.

Such a ferocious claim, one that puts our whole constitutional order on its head, is not something that can be easily undone. That’s the ranting threat of a would-be strongman and dictator The threat itself is like a bell that can’t be un-rung. Through the course of what was often an ugly debate, I was thinking a lot of the destructiveness of this entire campaign, virtually all of which stems from Trump’s transgressive, norm-demolishing behavior. It’s a topic we’ll have to return to in the ed blog and one the country is going to need to wrestle with. None of this is going to disappear after November 8th. These are slashing wounds to the country’s political fabric that will at best leave tremendous scar tissue we’ll still see for decades.

So did that caustic manner matter? It’s a little hard for me to figure that out simply because we know Trump is like this. It’s hard to see how anyone is going to be surprised. By any pre-2016 standard we know, the entirety of angry, blustering manner would be fatal for a presidential candidate. But we’ve been living with this guy for a year and a half. We all have a little bit of the trauma of living in the home of an abuser now. We’re accustomed to it. To a degree it starts to feel normal. My best guess is that through all the muck of this debate it will matter simply because it confirms what people already know.

The idea is you borrow against crypto for the down payment, then get a standard mortgage for the rest. The practical effect is, Fannie Mae is guaranteeing mortgages for people who get second mortgages to gamble with crypto. What could go wrong? ¯\(ツ)/¯

It’s not the first crypto backed mortgage, but it is the first accepted by Fannie Mae, which is under government conservatorship. The offering allows homebuyers to use their crypto assets as collateral. Fannie Mae will purchase those loans just like any other conforming mortgage.

“We have now finally created the infrastructure rails to enable any tokenized asset in America to be able to be pledged to help someone afford to buy a home,” Vishal Garg, CEO of Better, told CNBC in an interview. “It starts with bitcoin, starts with [USD Coin], but going forward, it can be Apple stock or Amazon stock, or any publicly traded mutual fund, bond fund, something that you might hold in your IRA, you’re going to be able to pledge that to buy a home.”

The idea is to serve Americans who have enough crypto assets to fund a mortgage down payment but do not want to sell those assets, which would both incur taxes and forfeit any future appreciation.

The new mortgage product allows them to keep the cryptocurrency and still secure home financing.

“Token-backed mortgages are a major first step to unlocking homeownership for the younger generations that have struggled with barriers to saving for a traditional down payment,” said Max Branzburg, head of consumer and business products at Coinbase, in a release.

Four chaotic hours later, she captured the exact moment a flash-bang grenade, fired by law enforcement to disperse protesters, illuminated the Capitol steps, throwing tear-gas smoke into sharp relief and casting a shadow of the American flag onto the iconic dome. The image reverberated across the United States and abroad in 2021. Media outlets and Congress have used it to emphasize the gravity of the day and to illustrate a symbol of democracy under siege.

When Millis saw the text from Brenner, she bolted down Independence Avenue and cut across a lawn to reach to the western side of the Capitol by 1:14 p.m. A large crowd streamed up the National Mall and approached scaffolding that had been set up for Joe Biden’s upcoming inauguration. Only a thin line of police held them back.

Already wearing a bulletproof vest, Millis immediately donned a gas mask and ballistic helmet. She took photos outside the west entrance of the building until after sunset, only stepping away once to find cellphone service and send photos to her editor, and to temporarily remove her gas mask.

The revolution started in 1775, the new states declared independence in 1776, articles of confederation adopted in 1777 & in effect 1781, constitution adopted 1788 & in effect 1789. July 4 1776 is considered the founding of the nation. Also, remember the words of Thurgood Marshall:

When contemporary Americans cite ‘The Constitution,’ they invoke a concept that is vastly different from what the Framers barely began to construct two centuries ago.
