Forgot to show you this picture of a raccoon I took. Good raccoon.

We'd wondered what was clearing out the feeders of dried mealworms periodically. Last night, spotted this fellow perched precariously atop the pole. Might be a different - plumper - raccoon, I think, to the last one. Either way, it'll have to explain to the bluebirds where all their snacks went.

A furry raccoon butt - complete with charmingly stripy tail dangling - poised somewhat precariously at the top of a bird feeder pole. The front half of the raccoon is thrust inside a bird feeder, the lid tipped up; presumably the little raccoon paws are grabbing at the dried mealworms inside and stuffing them into its mouth. The picture is a little blurry, because it's a low-light photo taken past dusk, and through a window with a bug screen. There are two other feeders dangling - both look emptied too - and greenery in the background.

Interesting point from a Kickstarter project update, on the impact of tariffs, made-in-Asia parts, and how the reality of building in America means production almost certainly won't return to the U.S., it'll just mean more expensive items overall. www.kickstarter.com/projects/sup...

As a snapshot of what makes Asian manufacturing hard to beat, the thermistor prototype boards are taking seven days door to door. That includes making our circuitboard, assembling the components on it, and shipping overseas, for under $15 a board. In my experience, you’d be lucky to get a quote from a domestic assembler in 7 days. There’s just not a lot of domestic options, and as we’ve talked about before, the small orders are usually either ignored or cost 5x more.

Tariffs cannot make up the difference. Remember when I talked about quotes from domestic board assemblers being 3 to 6 times more? That means that the equivalent of a $100 part from Asia would cost at minimum $300 in the US. If that Asian part now costs 54% more, or even 104% more, it’s not enough to change manufacturer behavior, only make things more expensive. And circuitboards are already a highly automated assembly—something that requires a lot of manual labor will cost way more.

Not now, Horned Owl Decoy!

The owl is grey and white, sitting on a molded stop. It has flashing red eyes which make it look like it is suffering from a particularly bad case of pink-eye, and is apparently made of "weather-resistant plastic" and can emit "frightening sounds" (presumably much like the gasp of horrified disgust I let out, when I opened Menard's email and saw it).
It'll be available for "immediate free shipping to store" Menards says, "while supplies last!" However long that ends up being, the nightmares will likely last forever.

This is a good, surprising-but-I-wish-it-wasn't read, but this section really made me pause. So often, we think of "coming out" - whether gender, or sexuality, or whatever - as saying "yes, I'm different." Whereas actually it's more like "I've stopped trying to make myself be different."
