I looked up "HR lady politics" to see if I was understanding the context and came upon this brilliant piece by @aselrod.bsky.social He nails it here with his definition of "dilettantism." The entire article is worth a visit, although I'm sure most commenting here read it. Cited in the Alt Text.

I want to argue here that Platner is a beneficiary of two kinds of populist thought, moving from both the bottom up and the top down. The first kind is the traditional sort, the kind that leads to Platner being excused as a hardscrabble everyman with rough edges. The second is an elite driven form of populism, which I will call dilettantism from here on. It’s the sort that underwrites the audacity of a Hotchkiss School dropout turned military adventurist turned oyster farmer to run for a Senate seat with no prior experience and no recognition that a single one of his subsequent scandals could be disqualifying.

There are over a million physicians. Most aren't in the AMA, don't pay attention to the AMA, and don't care who the AMA President-elect is. I doubt I could find five where I work that even know who the AMA President is.

Nurses don't have this kind of authority. Why is one nurse, Shirley Brown, being held up as the instigator of this?

In 1988, a nurse at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston decided she was fed up. She and her colleagues had grown alarmed about the number of women coming in to give birth who appeared to be addicted to crack cocaine. The hospital began drug testing pregnant patients — predominantly low-income Black women — and gathered with local law enforcement officials to come up with a plan: If the women tested positive, the hospital would hand them over to police. Soon, women, some still bleeding from childbirth, were being carried out of the hospital in shackles and chains.

Despite the concerns of Paltrow and others, 60 Minutes went ahead and re-aired its 1994 show (5/3l/98), making no mention of the changes in medical research and opinion, or the growing outcry among social service groups protesting turning mothers of cocaine-exposed babies over to the criminal justice system. The program certainly didn’t note that their story’s main source on South Carolina’s racially contentious policy, Nurse Shirley Brown, had testified in court that she objects to interracial marriage.

It's very obviously not a picture of lynching - in the US - you can tell from the uniforms. Google lens exists and you can look up this exact photo and find out where it's from (roughly). Wheat vs rubber isn't the issue. The issue is that Patton herself is saying this is from Kentucky during WW1.

I believe they call this a receipt.

I actually respected this woman. That's not what interests me. What interested me was the provocative photo used on the cover of the book (this is also to drive sales, fyi). That's not a picture of lynching in the US. You can tell by the photo, you can tell by the uniforms, you can tell by the setting. So I looked it up.
