Painter, monochromatic bon vivant, train aficionado, keeper of felines, Bellows Falls transcendentalist, Vermont partisan.
One of the minor tragedies of my last quarter-century has been seeing the once-stately, merely shuttered, paper mills of Bellows Falls be destroyed in slow motion due to no maintenance whatsoever. Private ownership. Taxes paid. All I can do is document what remains and how it feels.
Just saying… the impending desecration of Big Bend National Park is slated to cost at least two thirds of last year’s budget for the entire National Park Service, all in the name of “national security” on a stretch of the border that sees fewer than 0.045% of illicit cross-border traffic.
I started offering paid subscribers an “Absurdly Discounted Painting” each month. Rather than having orphan paintings sitting around my studio, I offer them for $450. This month’s beneficiary was the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center in Easton, Maryland. Painting sold in two minutes.
Watching an architecture documentary and just learned of the unfortunate name of one of my favorite architects.
The world may be going to hell, but Pvt. John Collins is not stressing about it.
As an artist, let me just say that American Flag Blue is a really deceptive color.
We got a new used cat from the used cat store. Welcome Pvt. John Collins to our little home.
The beautiful wreckage of the paper mills of Bellows Falls. Sketchbook study using a 2H pencil, to see if it films better than my preferred 3H - lots of people ask for film clips of my sketching practice, and we are trying to figure out how to do this. #ilovebellowsfalls #reasonablyfineartist
A former Mobil station in Cranford, NJ. I painted this 16x32 during a plein air event there in 2012, and was gratified that it won the ‘People’s Choice’ award. It’s really not ‘abandoned’ per se, but it makes a better title than ‘Gas Station Filled With Inexplicable Detritus.’
Toil on, son, and do not lose heart or hope. You are not utterly forsaken. I, too, am here; here in the darkness waiting, here attentive, here approving of your labor and your dream. - Thomas Wolfe, You Can't Go Home Again

When the cares of the world get you down, channel your inner Bernie Fuchs. Work in progress, 24x24.
Experimenting with a painting using WPA photo by Arthur Rothstein (he did the famous one of the Oklahoma family escaping the dust storm), whose son, Rob Stoner, was music director for the Rolling Thunder Revue, among much else. There’s a family who have influenced the American cultural experience!
