Watching these sun beams form as the fog and sunrise combined was truly one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen. Made better that it was with the ancient trees of the infamous Fanal Forest in Madeira. A moment I’ll never forget.

When Earth puts on a light show. 💥 It beats fireworks and laser beams!
A wonderful curved tree framed this moment in the mystical Fanal Forest - where sunbeams blasted through the ancient branches.
This was so incredibly special to see. It’s called a corona, where sunlight shines through cloud, diffracting into rings of iridescent colours when certain conditions are met. Lucky for me, this was in one of the most beautiful ancient forests in the world - Fanal, Madeira.

This felt like being on a film set, perhaps deep in Fangorn.
Fog turned pink from the setting sun. A phenomenon that was surreal to see!
Some forests make you feel like you’re inside a movie. I was sure these trees were going to start moving!
Sometimes the light makes it feel like you’re going to be beamed up into a UFO!
The Fangorn LOTR vibes were strong from this ancient forest…
I think I managed to recreate the scene from LOTR when Gandalf the White returns… in real life… 🤯
An ancient tree, one I like to call ‘The Screamer’

There are sunsets and there are SUNSETS. This was the latter. Above the clouds, looking out over this landscape, seeing the sun disappear was just utter perfection.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen light as good as that in the cloud forests of Madeira. The ancient trees combined with the mist rolling through, and sunlight, was truly superb. These moments were very fleeting, so I’m very pleased to have captured them from my camera.
