by this logic, why don't we just get Ukraine to play Russia at football and end the war once and for all. On the other hand, if football became the arbiter of territorial claims, it would make penalty shoot-outs even more exciting

The vulnerabilities exist, even if they are not being (very) actively exploited right now. They can also be fixed but this requires will & effort from the Executive and MP. It also requires a public to express their support (in principle they do!) and bodies themselves be worthy of our trust. 6/7

We also provide more detail on what a body does and how it fares under each of the six domains, and provide links to each bodies website and key sources (such as accounts documents or its framework document with govt). 4/7
We've now gone into detail for 33 scientific public bodies and 11 scientific advisory committees and scored them for each domain, and assigned an overall vulnerability rating. Each body has a set of key takeaways on its importance, why a govt might want to intefere and how it could. 3/7
This builds on our Oct'25 report which identified 6 domains of vulnerability for the UK's scientific & evidence-generating public bodies: 1. statutory status 2. who appoints its leadership 3. security of funding 4. who sets priorities 5. accountability mechanisms 6. Freedom to publish 2/7

ONS Death registry data is the gold standard source for determining the number of Covid deaths. I’ve plotted the weekly number of deaths where Covid contributed as a cause since the beginning of the pandemic. Last year there were 4,000 deaths & in most recent week of data, there were just 8. 4/7
The UK Health Security Agency has been collecting data on hospital admissions with Covid since 2020 but testing was reduced in Apr 2023. But plotting Covid admissions in England since Apr 2023 also shows just one wave since end 2024 and now record low levels of admissions. 3/7
