Wednesday also was declared as Malcolm X Day by Gov. Jim Pillen, who read a proclamation inducting Malcolm X into the Nebraska Hall of Fame and directing Nebraskans to recognize his achievements.

Chambers, who will turn 88 in July, wasn't included in Wednesday's program, but he took to the podium to celebrate the occasion and point out that he never thought the day would come when Nebraska would recognize Malcolm X's life and contributions.

"I never thought I'd live long enough to see a white, conservative Republican governor from a white, conservative Republican state like Nebraska participate in the induction of Malcolm X," Chambers said.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen said Palestinians "are born to kill Jews and Christians" before signing an executive order public school boards and postsecondary institutions to adopt a discrimination and harassment policy that includes antisemitism. journalstar.com/news/state-r...

He added that in the Israeli village he visited, more than 400 people had been slaughtered who had tried to help Palestinians.

"Everybody, whether it's in the Gaza Strip, or elsewhere, they want to kill every Jewish person on the planet,” Pillen said of Palestinians. “Anybody that wants to stand up and talk about Palestinians, they’ve got to understand that those people are born to kill Jews and Christians.”

When asked if this generalization of Palestinians was harmful rhetoric, Pillen said all he can go by is what he saw, learned and heard.

"I sat with 25 other governors 30 days after the October attacks. A couple of governors had to get up and leave after seeing dead bodies being dragged through the streets in Gaza," Pillen said. "I don't think I need to go into any more of what actually took place. That's not a generalization."

A conservative faculty member at the University of Nebraska at Kearney admits he is not being discriminated against but is mad because his colleagues avoid him.

UNK does not have a campus climate that is hostile to Christians or conservatives. Each student, faculty member, and student organization was asked whether they experienced intimidation or academic or employment consequences because of their beliefs. No individuals described any occurrences nor offered any evidence. Two individuals described it as a “perception.” The faculty member who claimed that the campus culture was not welcoming, and that voicing conservative ideas could have negative impacts on a person’s career, said in an interview that no administrator had ever intimidated him or caused negative impacts on his career because of his political views, and added that campus leadership is accepting of his viewpoints. The negative reaction, he said, came from individual colleagues who he felt were not accepting of his views.

Scottsbluff Police investigated an apparent accidental shooting on Saturday.

Scottsbluff Police responded at about 12:07 p.m. to Short Stop, a convenience store and gas station located at 2002 Ave.

Police received a report that an individual had been shot by a BB gun. While officers were en route, updated information indicated that the incident involved a shotgun, Cpl. Stefan Yocum released.

At the scene, Yocum said, officers located a truck with an attached camper.

The passenger side door panel of the vehicle had sustained damage consistent with a shotgun blast.

Preliminary results of an investigation determined that the owner of the truck had pulled into the convenience store to purchase merchandise. While the truck passenger stood near the front passenger-side door, a dog in the back seat reportedly moved from one side of the vehicle to the other.

During that movement, the dog triggered a shotgun that had a live shell in the chamber, causing the firearm to accidentally discharge.

A shotgun pellet struck a woman stopped at the traffic light on Avenue I with her arm resting out of the window. Yocum said one pellet from the shotgun blast struck her in the upper right arm.

Her injury is not believed to be life-threatening, and a family member transported her to Regional West Medical Center for treatment.

Yocum said the incident remains under investigation by the Scottsbluff Police Department.

He reminded the public that per Nebraska State Statute, it is illegal to travel with a loaded shotgun in a vehicle.

Following our initial report, The Plains Sentinel spoke with more students who believe the university is actively creating an environment that forces students to keep their personal beliefs closeted and limits the academic rigor on campus. Allison Arens, a senior studying English at UNK, said she was shamed for asking for an alternative option to the required reading, which she said was the “equivalent of lesbian pornography.”

“Later that week, I was informed by another classmate of mine who had not initially joined in my boycott of the lesbian porn that the rest of my peers chastised me as being ‘simple’ and ‘ignorant’ for my unwillingness to read the grotesque text,” she said. “My professor and my peers saw me as sensitive and uncultured.”

Arens said she found a lot of the books required for class “intellectually unstimulating” as professors promoted poorly written political content over classics of the western cannon. She said at one point she asked the chair of the department to allow her to do an independent study of John Milton, the author of the epic poem “Paradise Lost,” but was told she was not allowed to.
