As McGill et al. 2007 (best starting point) suggest, SADs are more informative in a broader ecological context. One of the main conclusions of our paper (Koffel et al. 2022) is that a lot of things combine to make a SAD.

DISCUSSION

What determines the shape of SADs? Our analysis suggests that the simple answer is ‘there is no simple answer’. Both local processes (environmental filtering and species interactions) and the properties of the regional species pool (species abundances and traits) jointly determine the distribution of commonness and rarity in a community. These factors span from local to landscape and biogeographic scales, each subject to tremendous variation and historical idiosyncrasy. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely that there is a universal, parameter- sparse SAD applicable across all communities. Despite the manifold variety of possible SADs it can produce, our framework identifies key factors that shape them— rates of exclusion and dispersal, regional population abundance and the species-density
distribution.

"In 1974 I submitted a letter to the editors of The American Naturalist pointing out the confusion, but my manuscript was rejected on the advice of three referees. The first said my argument was wrong. The second said it was right but was common knowledge. The third said the broken-stick model was as dead as the dodo and did not merit further discussion. I am inclined to agree with the third but we seem to be in a minority. The second evidently overestimated the rate of diffusion of knowledge. For the benefit of the first and those who share his misunderstanding, it seems worthwhile to explain matters in the pages of The American Naturalist."
