My cousin Andre is the press secretary for the mayor of Leiden, and today he gave me a personal tour of the town hall, which combines a 16th-century facade with a marvelous 20th-century interbellum interior. Lots of Carrara marble and wooden inlay by M.C. Escher.

The Sixteenth Century Journal seeks a new Editor to work with the existing editorial staff, as Dr. Karen Nelson has just been chosen as one of SCJ’s Senior Editors. The Editor works with the other Editors—Barbara Pitkin and Jennifer DeSilva—to find reviewers for articles submitted for potential publication and guide reviews and articles through the online peer-review system. The Editors should attend the Sixteenth Century Society Conference for SCJ’s annual editors’ meeting, and may carry out other duties as well, such as representing SCJ at academic conferences, organizing conference panels, and inviting submissions. This is an unpaid position.
All manuscript review is handled through email and the Editorial Manager system, coordinated by the journal’s managing editor at the University of Chicago Press. The new Editor will be trained to use the online submission system, and may therefore be located anywhere in the world, as all work is online. Manuscripts come in throughout the year, and SCJ prides itself on a short turn-around in its submission process, so the position involves work across the year.
Dr. Nelson has been primarily responsible for submissions in literary and cultural studies, and her replacement should have strong expertise in these fields. Knowledge of other fields, such as women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, or art history, is also welcome. The new editor will also need a broad understanding of the field of early modern studies to fit with SCJ's interdisciplinary mandate, global coverage, and international authorship and readership. SCJ’s editorial team all maintain active research and publication profiles, but it is recommended that those applying for this position not be under stringent publication requirements. Experience in editing books and/or journals preferred.

Through sheer dumb luck, I managed to book a vacation in Iceland during the worst of the mainland heatwave. 14° in Reykjavik today, compared to 34° in Leiden.
