This reminds me that I meant to ask you about this usage: "It’s a pie in the sky." I know M-W has "pie in the sky" as a noun phrase, and "pie-in-the-sky" as an adjective, but nowhere (including in their example sentences, to they have "a" before "pie." It strikes me as awkward. Thoughts, please?

I got to visit today with my friend's dog, Chili. He had growth plate issues in his front legs as a pup, so he's walks a little funny, but he's the sweetest boy.
