One such individual was General Sir Trevor Chute who employed scorched earth tactics burning Māori villages indiscriminately on his “march around Mount Taranaki.”
The British Army committed widespread war crimes (massacres and summary executions) during the Indian Rebellion of 1857-59 especially following events at Cawnpore and Lucknow. Many of the officers and regiments responsible for these crimes were later deployed to Aotearoa NZ.
