Newspaper strips came first, but my first comic book was Superman Annual #2. Lots of Kirby-inspired stuff; I read it so much the cover fell off. Also, it was over my head at the time (I was 4) but the back-up story features Maggie Sawyer coming out as DC's first lesbian hero, which is sort of cool.

a Donkey Kong competition?! I'm so back

A certificate for the 1995 Blockbuster Game Championship 2, awarded to the poster after he became "store champion" in the Super NES format (ie, Donkey Kong Country). It came with a year's worth of free video game rentals, and also glowed in the dark.

Not sure what's going on between these two restaurants, but this feels like it's just the tip of the iceberg.

picked up a bunch of old Middle-earth Role Playing books, and I underestimated how much these illustrations influenced my interpretation of The Lord of the Rings. Like, this Angus McBride piece from the cover? If I picture the Fellowship in my head, this is what I see.
