Movie reviews, news and interviews since 2004. We particularly love the unusual and absurd – kung fu, giallo, Czech New Wave, etc. Letterboxd:
Reading Hammer of the Gods and on the Zeppelin upswing arc. The satisfaction of what seems to be a “stick it to the man” moment is pretty heavily tempered by knowing that in economic reality he absolutely made that dude’s day by paying full price and commission.
#Watched Sharpe’s Rifles (1993) - So much electric guitar! So much smoldering young Sean Bean! The production values are what they are and the script is a bit clumsy, but Bean and Brian Cox can overcome a lot of flaws through sheer magnetism. Ask any random sexy Spanish freedom fighter lady.
Uuuhh, note to the dude editing the wiki (I’m going to go out on a limb and assume it’s a dude) - the wiki entry should not read like you are hiding in the closet of the subject of the entry, put it back in your pants buddy. Was this Anthony Lane maybe?
RIP king. Sam Neil was one of those dudes that just improved every single film he appeared in, and also just seemed like an extremely sharp cookie.
The two sequels. Man, these covers are burned into my brain. Anyone else remember these?
Kick off to the new #BloodBowl league season yesterday, took my Tomb Kings (The Play Phar-aohs) went 1-1, got beat by some elf shenanigans but then the mummies and skellies managed to beat up the werewolves/ghouls/zombies/ghosts/frankensteins.
#moreunreadpilecatchup One Punch Man Vols 32-331 (ONE/Murata 2024) - the end game battle with Garo is really not my favorite stretch of the series, I prefer the goofy interpersonal shit, but at least we get Metal Bat and Drive Knight being weird and Saitama surfs an aircraft carrier which is 😘
We’re doing a limited campaign start with three fighters, so think I’ll take these three out for my starter Thin Coat Lizzies (honestly I have no idea how to play this game, it’s simple on its face but so complicated under the hood) #necromunda
Finally going to try Necromunda this weekend and bust out the Escher gang I’ve been steadily (and slowly) working on for months. Knocked out another ganger last night for the “Thin Coat Lizzies” #necromunda (arm in a sling really not helping my speed 🙄)
#moreunreadpilecatchup Conan Vol 1: The Frost Giant’s Daughter (Busiek/Nord 2005) - technically a re-read. Solid Conan story-telling but ye gads the main attraction is Cary Nord’s absolutely -glorious- artwork. Pictured below: when you meet a girl, when you meet her brothers
#Thorsday I dig that one of the big early continuing plotlines is that Odin is super butthurt about Thor having a thing for Jane Foster, a dirty little mortal. His eyes go so big crazy at the very thought. Also love the dumb ass who tries to mug Odin, think he escaped from a Dick Tracy comic.
#Thorsday also a big fan of Gullin, who has a giant boar head and tries to induce hammer envy in Thor. Wonder if this guy ever came back?
#Thorsday we finally get the Enchantress and the Executioner! Shes a bit off-model but I love that Kirby basically draws her in the modern setting as a Monroe/Mansfield type. And the Executioner just looks bonkers and awesome.
So many outstanding individual issues too, like this one. Like, for one issue Wild Weasel gets to be the coolest guy in Cobra.
I loved when he had Raptor pop up and basically every single character points out he looks like a stupid asshole. This guy. Yes I had the toy 😆
The result is that in any given scene it feels like the lead is Dennis Dun, Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, or Lisa Blount. I always wonder, was that the plan? Or did Parker just not pop and the film was edited around him to focus on the more interesting characters? Regardless, love this film.
#Rewatched Prince of Darkness (1987) - the dramatic structure of this is so odd. The Thing has a large cast but a clear central protagonist in Kurt Russell. This, it feels like Jameson Parker’s Brian was meant to be the lead but then just … isn’t? Some day I need to read or listen to a making of. /
Look, I grew something last weekend!! An actual successful flower.
yeesh, head healed but arm still pretty fucked up and still in a sling (can’t move it quickly or extend it properly), and three days after a big chip came off a molar, dentist thinks because of the impact. Didn’t ruin an excellent holiday weekend, but man, blargh, no running or biking for a while.
yeah boy, worth forcing my sorry tired injured ass out of the house
Hell yes!!! So dumb, so fun. Plus Jaime Pressly with a truly buck wild look.
Time to rewatch Nico Mastorakis’s Terminal Exposure, the movie that does Blow Up but with asses
when Sir Mix-a-Lot said “even white boys got to shout” I didn’t know he was talking about the whitest white boy, but Elric just got sprung
More chaos pics from the storm. The whole neighborhood is tree down. Not home but my daughter and neighbors are sending pics.
#Watched Ant Pasted (1953) - Elmer Fudd vs some very determined ants that aren’t keen on his fireworks. Kazooka for the win. Happy 4th of July!
