Released cARL v0.4.0 today: 𝗰𝗔𝗥𝗟 𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝘆. v0.4.0 makes .github/copilot-instructions.md the shared cARL loader. Every other harness gets a tiny shim that points back to it. Tiny grumpy senior engineer as code continues. github.com/goldjg/cARL/...

Asked GitHub Copilot to check a contributor PR for cARL compliance. Code was clean. But it found no active PR contract and 4 pre-existing failing tests needing documentation. That’s the value: not “bad code”, but missing durable governance context. Repo memory > vibes.

If you think there will be a CI version of cARL on the roadmap, you'd be right. Simple prompt to GitHub Copilot, to review a repo it's never seen before, that doesn't even have the cARL artifacts bootstrapped into it. And just look at it :)

Tested cARL v0.3.0 with Claude Haiku 4.5 in GitHub Copilot. Prompt: “What’s the rules for working in this repo?” No steering. It found cARL, read the governance artefacts, and produced the right operating model. Cost: 11 credits / $0.11. Tiny grumpy senior engineer in your repo.
