Got to go long on my own anxieties as an artist, issues I have with being marketable first, and the deterioration of all things into aesthetics.

As we continue to move through burnout and the once safe bet of existing IP is slowly reduced, I think we will move more and more into the aesthetic-ification of art. Is your thing Dark Academia? Romantasy? Southern Gothic? Lynchian? Liminal? It’s a culture that results from everything needing a pitch deck first. A vibes-based economy.

Lindy West’s boundaries have certainly been obliterated, but I doubt it is due to union with the divine. I think West has fooled herself into thinking her tears are a secular sign of something similar. If she is crying, it’s because she has worked through so much, and done “the work” so well. Her tears, to her, seem to be a sign that she is experiencing some profound emergence into something, but what is that thing? What is she reaching for? Faith without safety is terror, and Lindy West is clearly terrified.

This is one of several posts I’m going to make, breaking down that list. Let’s start with the idea of character development, otherwise known as invoking.

Ego and personality aren’t permanently defined traits. You get to try on different personalities and presentations until you find one that fits, like outfits. No one shows up the same way in all aspects of life. We wear different personality costumes to the doctor’s office, a friend’s birthday party, Thanksgiving dinner, a funeral, and so on. Often, this is unconscious. We are going to bring this process to the surface and make it conscious.

The self does not exist. It is an eternally changing thing that you get to have a hand in crafting. You are not defined, and thus get to define yourself.

People have an idea that magic has to be complicated or always involve elaborate ritual. The truth is magic is the fabric of reality, and we do it without thinking. I think this list is a good introduction for people new to the idea of incorporating magic into their lives.

The following list is a non-exhaustive way to change your life. I arrived at each bullet point after years of trial and error, and experimenting with different techniques from chaos magic, as well as other disciplines. Magic is the language that best describes the fabric of reality, and how we can all break, weave, create, and destroy it. Use this list when you want to take control of your life, change your life, or feel like you need a boost to achieve your goals. You can do all of these things or none of these things. It’s up to you.

In lieu of any government regulation, financial repercussions, or other outside force stepping in to reign in AI, people have to step up and make it a socially shameful and financially ruinous thing to be associated with. I believe we can look to the tactics and methods of anti-fur campaigns for inspiration here. Posting AI art, hosting AI art at a gallery or space, screening films made with AI, should fill people with the same fear and shame that made people hang up their fur coats thirty years ago.

$Reality and its mediation has become increasingly personal and divided over the last decade. Algorithms, the damn phones, social media, and legacy media collapse have led to a fracturing and dissolving of consensus reality, leaving us to create smaller and smaller networks of people who see the world as we do, who can agree on core tenets of how things work. The more gaps appear between our definitions of reality, the more liminal space is created, leaving more space for the weirdness to come in.$

Fort argues that we moved from a Dominant of religion, to a Dominant of science, also called the “Dominant of Exclusion”, and that soon we would enter a “Dominant of Wider Inclusion” sometimes also referred to as “The Dominant of Witchcraft.” In this shift, so-called damned events that were discounted in the previous era of exclusion, would now become accepted as commonplace. Fort predicted an era on the horizon, where all consensus reality would break down, where expertise itself would become suspect, and where firm lines and definitions would become blurry or disappear altogether. All the things that are impossible, according to experts, but continue to happen will eventually become too numerous to ignore. When that dam breaks, we will leave a Dominant held up by strict rules mediated by elites, gatekeepers, rulers, and experts, and enter one mediated more by direct personal experience of unexplained phenomena.

I recently decided to self-harm and read through that big, scary AI 2027 thing that people are freaking out about and got a similar feeling of paranoia from the document. For those that don’t know, AI 2027 is a projection of where AI is headed, how it will take over the world, and why we are basically powerless to stop it.

It’s very stupid, and I’m not interested in arguing that point. The whole thing reads like teenage boys yes-anding each other into oblivion about a video game they are playing. This is going to have horrible consequences, but not the ones they predict or hope for. I resent having to think about tech stuff at all because it is ugly and annoying, but at this point I mostly resent having to live in a world where people tell ghost stories around the campfire about “agent-4” and “OpenBrain” coming to kill us all.

Paranoia is a funny thing. When people are paranoid, you almost don’t want to be the odd one out. It can feel offensive, or even dangerous. If you don’t join in on the fear at best, you come off as out of touch, at worst you come off as dismissing other’s suffering and pain, and even worse you come off as suspicious. A lot of the language and marketing around AI centers around how this will inevitably replace all human labor and relationships, so you should really get in now before this thing takes off. The evidence? Oftentimes it’s vibe-based, ominous, spectral.

There is an old phrase in occult circles that I think diagnoses this problem pretty well: “banish with laughter.” Laughter is a banishing ritual. If you have invoked a big scary demon that threatens to fuck your shit up, you don’t necessarily have to burn fancy herbs or recite chants to get rid of it, you just have to laugh at it. Magically speaking, laughter robs everything, material, spiritual, emotional, of its power, and gives that power to you.
