Congratulations to Dir. Ora DeKornfeld, the winner of the Best Short Documentary at the Mountain Film Festival, making her film THE GRANDFATHER PUZZLE Oscar-qualifying. Holocaust survivor Ezra Ben Gershom (1922-2006) was born in Wurzburg as the fifth child of a German Jewish family. He survived the Holocaust by living under a false identity, including eluding the Gestapo by being on the move and sporting a Hitler Youth uniform. #RememberThis

Holocaust survivor Barbara Ledermann Rodbell remained in hiding until Amsterdam was liberated by Canadian troops. Her father, Franz, mother, Ilse and sister, Susanne, were murdered in Auschwitz. Barbara immigrated to the US in Nov 1947. She and her husband, Martin Rodbell, raised four children.

The Claims Conference highlighted the future of Holocaust education at the House of Austrian History with the presentation of a virtual reality study. The study demonstrated how technology can preserve the memory of the Shoah for future generations and showed the strong learning impact of VR.

“Being able to ensure direct payments to survivors in addition to the expansions to the social welfare services we are able to fund is essential in making sure every Holocaust survivor is taken care of for as long as it is required,” - Greg Schneider, Claims Conference EVP.

There are an estimated 196,600 Jewish Holocaust survivors globally, living across 90 countries. This is down from the 220,000 survivors estimated to be alive when the Claims Conference released this data in Jan 2025. The data forces us to accept that Holocaust survivors will not be with us forever.

The Mauthausen Memorial Path educational bus tour, facilitated by the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, will provide information specific to the Jews who were imprisoned at Mauthausen. By confronting history, the tour aims to foster a more humane civil society and combat antisemitism.
