I find it very embarrassing for our field that we've been having to repeat this about "AI" and writing instruction since I was one-year old (from an article by Fred Kemp in a 1987 issue of Writing Center Journal)

You may marvel, and many do, that computers can discover and describe in minute detail these characteristics of a student's paper, but I have a different reaction. Taking my cue from Artificial Intelligence research, Iook for truths about human discourse from what the computer can't do. The fact that a computer can perform the above analyses in ready fashion while being completely locked out of the content of a paper suggests that computer editing, while no doubt useful commercially and in discourse analysis, is not very useful pedagogically. Style-checkers promote a band-aid approach to writing instruction and direct time and attention away from the larger issue: the quality of the student's ideas and the relationship between those ideas and the form of expression she employs."

yesterday I listened to some undergraduate writing tutors present some research on AI in the writing center and I was especially struck by this slide:

I just have to hope that our contribution to this discussion will be heard by faculty and understand that we, as students, do not want a university and a world in which AI does everything for us.

I'm sorry but if you don't want to develop the criteria by which you're assessing students then you shouldn't be teaching

Julie York, a computer science teacher at South Portland High School, has long incorporated new technology into her teaching, and has found generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini to be "incredibly useful." She has used it to create voiceovers for presentations when she was tired, to help make rubrics and lesson plans and to build a chatbot that can answer questions during class, which she says hells her balance the amount of time she spends with each student.

"I don't think there's any educator who wakes up in the morning, and is like, 'oh my God, I hope I can make a rubric today.' I just don't think you're going to find any,' she said. "And there's no teacher who isn't tired."

Oh, but it wasn't only my father, it was the silence . . . no one told me I could wear lipstick and so I was silent, because they did not give me words to use, I had to make them up. That's why I wrote such crude and unbalanced phrases. I had to make them up myself. There was no story for a boy in lipsticks.

So--so every time I loved lipstick my stomach aches and the only way to make it stop aching was to prove that boys do not love lipstick, and so because I was a boy I did not love lipstick either. But all of a sudden I loved lipstick and because no one told me I could love lipstick, I thought that meant I could not love lipstick, and the more I loved it, the more I would die. I thought that the day I surrendered to that love would be the day I would no longer be anything at all--not even a butterfly. And butterflies barely exist. Butterflies are the residue of our dreams.
