Collected four books from local library today and they were so big the staff asked if I needed a hand carrying them out to my car! #PhDLife 📚
Decided to spend the evening in the rectory paddock writing a letter to my son instead of causing mischief. The meadow will be cut tomorrow, so it was nice to watch the sun turn it golden for the last time
I spent a lovely afternoon at St Andrew’s church in Northborough where I gave a talk on Martha Clare, wife of poet John Clare. This extraordinary blanket of crocheted flowers was created by the committee who organised the event. I’m sure Martha would approve
It is a beautiful evening in South Lincs. It was amazingly quiet out there, but I met a beautiful dog and his owner and had the paths to myself. It smells great too!
This Sunday I will be giving a talk on Martha Clare in the gorgeous Northborough church. There will also be a talk on the Victorian overseers book, which has been newly restored. If you’re visiting the #JohnClare festival or local, it would be lovely to see you. Starts at 2.30pm!
Behold this gorgeous thatching from a house in Northborough near Peterborough - the mullet of thatching!
Spent a gorgeous hour or so at the Norman Cross Gallery today. It’s open for the Peterborough Artists’ Open Studios event and it’s a great opportunity to visit the site and see/buy some artworks from local artists. . Open tomorrow and next weekend
Went for a morning pootle before the heat arrives. The breeze is definitely cooler closer to the river which is keeping the temperature and humidity down a smidge
Attempted to get Bea to work whilst I slept but she wasn’t interested. Both of us are sleeping solidly each afternoon and refusing to go outside until it’s cooler. This is going to be a loooong, sweaty week for both of us
Sitting in the shade of the garden to work and being horribly distracted by starlings mimicking an ambulance 🚑 they’re in that image somewhere!
Another wonderful morning at Deeping Lakes. Nice to see something other than a muntjac!
A little frayed at the edges today, so I’ve treated myself to some peonies
I really am determined to watch all films and programmes relating to the French Revolution 😂 #CarryOn
A very soggy Bertie Arms at Uffington near Stamford. 5 ⭐ for the gluten free fish and chips 😋
Positive: added another island to my Norman Cross POW map Negative: took my cat back to the vet after she took a long drink of water and weed it back into the same bowl! She’s got some new pain meds and I’ve got an updated map
Best foxglove in the garden ever and entirely free after self seeding!
This old lady has returned from the vet’s after a barrage of tests. Thankfully nothing serious detected (yet) other than an overwhelming hatred of men! She refused to let the male nurse handle her but calmed down when a woman took over
Listen for the cuckoo! The River Welland looking east at Deeping Lakes
Absolute paradise down at #DeepingLakes this morning. The air was entirely full of birdsong but there was barely a person in sight. Managed to record lots of birds on the Merlin app and saw many others beside this. Very, very low numbers of water birds but the gulls were doing well #birds
It was rather beautiful down at the town orchard this afternoon. Anyone know which bird the feather is from?
Safely returned from a few days researching in Amsterdam. Brushed up on my Dutch and ate like a queen!
For #postboxsaturday here’s a lovely GR postbox from the centre of Market Deeping. It’s a Lincolnshire postbox with views of Cambridgeshire trees
Walrus from noble family on his grand tour annoyed by media intrusion
Pootled through Thorpe Wood this afternoon (not the police station!) and was treated to almost meadows of wild garlic and bluebells. Full of birds, squirrels and insects too, so packed with interest. The scent was heavenly!
There’s an awkward pigeon nest in the centre of town, but the two chicks are growing well and what a view!
A stunning day in Cambridge! Beautiful weather, inspiring undergraduates and engaging conversations. Sadly, terrible photos 😅
