dying is hard work,
we know that:
look at all that could have killed us but failed.
we've even survived ourselves.

it's slow and then all at once.
they say your life flashes before your eyes.
i've heard tale it's more like swimming,
swimming towards a ship speeding north.
and you know you won't reach it,
lactic acid building up
in that space where time loses meaning.
all the while;
families playing in the water,
tanning on the shore,
the schools of fish don't seem to notice you.
your heart waving goodbye:
"goodbye
to the sweetest loves i've known,
to the only body i remember,
to the earth who gave me shelter and joy and terror."
you, the violet sea,
and what has created you -
the vignettes of memories,
all the words still stuck in your throat.

i don't know if there's peace in it.
i've only seen the waves weather a living, fading person.
watching their bones continue to paddle against thrashing waves.
we turn the lights low,
whisper passages from their favorite book.
share stories of their life.

on that ship, facing you,
arms waving franctically, throwing up flares,
yelling:
"the boat has no steering,
but dear beloved, we can't forget you.
we will give our breath to your name,
since we cannot give it to your lungs.
dear gods, please slow this vessel,
shield their vessel.
can you hear us?"
