Let’s hit the road

Sunset at Monarch Pass

Hiking buddies

Two dogs are sitting on a large, flat rock in the woods. Both dogs are facing the camera and wear harnesses. They each have pointy, dark ears and appear mostly white. The dog on the left is larger and has a dark “mask” around her eyes like a husky. The fur of the smaller dog on the right is flecked with black and brown spots. His mouth is open and his tongue out in an eager, friendly expression.

The trunks of mostly slender, bare trees are dense in the background. Dry leaves carpet the forest floor. Several large rocks sit in the background to the right; close inspection reveals that they are partly covered with green moss and pale lichen.

Dog dance

Two dogs are playfully sparring in a snowy backyard. Bright morning sunshine creates long shadows over the snow, which is pockmarked with footprints. Both dogs are primarily black and white and have pointed ears. The smaller of the two, on the right, holds his fluffy, white tail high. His mouth is open, and he appears to be yelling at the larger dog, whose head is low as she circles to lunge at him.

The same two dogs are in same yard; the snow is riddled with footprints. The smaller dog, left, is hunched with his tail high and his head low, turned toward the larger dog; he appears to be ready to lunge at her. The larger dog, right, is crouched with her front legs splayed and her head, ears, and corners of her mouth pulled back. The white of her left eye is showing, and her appearance could be lovingly described as “derpy.”

A visit from Champ

Color photo of Champ, a tiny eight-year-old Pomeranian. He is standing among faded yellow fallen maple leaves, looking up into the camera with a sweet, wide-eyed expression. His poofy fur is mostly dark grey, but his face, chest, and wee paws are white, and there are tan streaks in his fluffy tail. His eyes are round and black, and his short, narrow muzzle ends in what appears to be a small, angelic smile beneath a perfect black nose.

Another photo of Champ, taken closer to his level. He is sitting, facing the camera, among fallen leaves that are mostly pale gold, with two red leaves in the lower left corner of the frame. The fur on his face and chest is primarily white with some grey intermixed; the rest of his fur is dark grey. He is looking into the camera, again with what appears to be a sweet smile on his pointy little muzzle. Upon close examination, one of his endearingly crooked lower teeth is visible poking out of the side of his mouth (on the viewer’s left), as is a bit of his pink tongue.

Vulture Fest Eve

Photo of the downtown boardwalk in the village of Makanda, Illinois. Three adjacent two-story brick buildings that house various shops are visible. The building on the viewer’s left is narrow and gray, with the two tall, second-floor window frames painted bright green, and the first-floor window and door frames painted orange and yellow. Brightly colored smiley-face flags hang from the upper windows. A telephone pole stands in front of this building.

The building in the center is wider, built of red brick, with a wooden balcony that runs across the front. “H.L. BELL” is painted in white near the roofline. A white banner reading “Vulture Fest/3rd weekend of October/on the Makanda Boardwalk” hangs on the balcony rail. Vines grow on the balcony’s vertical supports.

Part of the building on the viewer’s right is visible. It is also red brick with a wooden balcony, over the left end of which is a lattice awning. There are many potted plants on both levels in front of the building, although they are obscured by shadows.

There are orange traffic cones with yellow “caution” tape, an easy-up canopy, and a white golf cart on the street in front of the boardwalk, in preparation for this weekend’s Vulture Fest.

Treetops (still mostly green) and a partly cloudy but blue sky are visible behind and above the buildings.

Tiny hitchhiker
