wild to peek into a random family's photograph collection on the Internet Archive and see this breakdown of views on the 'About' page

the Collection Info for a family photo archive that is preserved and publicly visible on the Internet Archive. in the last 30 days, there have been 910 views from California USA, 166 views from Guangdong China, and only a handful of views from various other places (#3 is New Jersey USA with 25 views, then Ohio USA with 18, etc.)

I guess today is the day to say that one of my favorite sets of stamps is the 1976 Cabo Verde first anniversary of independence. a little celebration of liberation that looks like they're having an awesome disco pyramid party

set of four stamps. they each feature a crowd of Cabo Verdans, broken manacles and raised fists, celebrating their independence from Portugal. in the background, the sun rises behind pyramid-shaped hills. the stamps also feature the coat of arms. the sky is a different groovy color on each stamp: blue for the 50 centavo, gray for the 3 escudo, pink for the 15 escudo, green for the 30 escudo

score for today's Yankees @ Athletics MLB game. the final score is 13-8 Yankees, the Yankees finishing with 11 hits and 1 fielding error, and the Athletics finishing with 12 hits and no fielding errors.

the thing is, the Yankees scored all 13 of their runs in the top of the third inning.

I know the FTC and the USCO are sort of agog hoping there's a magical straw they can pick to solve AI externalities, hence the repeated calls to the public to help, but mathematically there aren't any.

Allowing one company to open a substantial lead in generative AI would be disastrous for society at large -- I shouldn't need to explain why -- and frankly, the world needs more people to USE these models, not pray to them through closed APIs.

You could say, if AI is like the aluminum market, that this is an adversarial race to the bottom & nobody wins. In a business sense, maybe, I guess. In a safety sense, it's unambiguously a good thing; if nobody has a sustainable edge they don't go foom or get too centralized.
