RIP Sam Neill this is literally the greatest interview I've ever read.
Surprised how much I liked Solaris (2002). I remember it getting panned when it came out, but I think that was just bad marketing. It's far from the typical "Hollywood remake." Ponderous, scary, weird. None of the characters are especially sympathetic but that's a big part of the boldness.
That's ok Labcorp I am something of a subject-matter expert.
Normally I have a rule that I can't buy any more Criterions until I watch all the discs I bought in the last sale but these were just too good to pass up.
I know most people my age love Labyrinth—and I do too—but what surprised me the most after my latest rewatch (my first in 15 years) is how much more I like it now than I did as a kid. Back then, it was just a puppet-showcase, but now it's an epic parable about choosing to leave childhood behind.
Masters of the Universe (1987) doesn't have the budget to pull off anything spectacular (the cleverest parts of the script are how it manages to keep costs below $22 million, mostly by setting half of it in California) but it's got a lot of low-fi charm. Langella is particularly inspired.
"Bug Buster" seems to know it's no good, which makes for some fun self-aware humor, but idk if that's enough to actually "recommend" it to anyone. The only reason I can think to watch is if Doug Jones himself suggests you check it out as an example of his lesser-known work.
I remember *deciding* to watch Phenomena a few years back, and apparently I gave it a two-star rating on Letterboxd, but I have literally no memory of watching it. Like, none whatsoever. Murderous chimps? Mind-controlled insects? Donald Pleasance? If you say so.
Eating the foam might not actually be his fault, though. Apparently, he had a "paradoxical reaction" to anesthesia for an unrelated procedure, which made him agitated & voracious instead of calm & relaxed. He ripped through his carrier's zipper and ate all that in about 5 minutes.
My beloved son [pejorative] decided to chow down on some foam flooring-tiles this weekend and subsequently wracked up 4 months' rent worth of vet bills. I'm weirdly euphoric though, after getting confirmation that his endoscopy went well and he's gonna make a full recovery.

I always heard Cool World was "too weird" or "too horny" to be any good but I think the real problem is that it just feels like it's making up the plot as it goes along. Goals and motivations just do not transfer from scene to scene.
