CAUSIN MUCH MAYHEM DROPPIN DRAMA Tech Art Director @ 17-BIT in Kyoto. Ex-Square Enix, Anchor Inc, 90s PC Gamer. My opinions are mine, yadda yadda. He/him
Paging @dark1x.bsky.social for a future Digital Foundry comparison (Tass Times in Tonetown C64/Apple II/Apple IIGS)
Check out some 3-way comparisons! The jump from 8-bit to 16-bit was huge.
Becky Heineman's TASS TIMES IN TONETOWN source code just got dropped at Kansasfest, the big Apple II meetup. Contains source for C64, Apple II 8-bit and Apple IIGS. Contains a higher-res version of the "Becky getting decapitated" image in the IIGS source! archive.org/details/tass...
Bonus: here's a Model 2 texture sheet. Eyes were layered on as decals, and colors are driven by a luma LUT.
So this is arguably not insane, given how this is likely being done in 1995 and these are the most convincing realtime humans that have put on a screen so far (Toy Story was 95, and we know how THOSE offline rendered human characters looked). From what I can deduce...
I've been doing some archaeology on 90s CG boards and I'd like to talk about the completely unhinged texturing of Virtua Fighter 3. VF1 was literally NO texturing; all detail was in flat shaded geometry. VF2 was beautifully painted textures (16-shade grayscale colored with a LUT). VF3 is this: 🧵
Check out this actual texture from VF3, literally a photograph of a shoe from a "whatever" perspective. Reminder: these were the greatest graphics on the planet in 1996
Okay folks, I have checked my catalogs and I cannot find any indication of what the hell this stick is or what it once was. PS1 connector, The back is entirely custom squishy vinyl so I can't find a maker. The POPEYE is an obvious sticker. What IS this?
How is it that Bubsy gets re-releases and BOOGERMAN gets absolutely nothing
And this guy looks fucking unbearable! Man they were just lettin' anyone into Nintendo pressers back then
Also can you ID this ikemen who appears for 3 seconds at the end of the tape?
NINTENDO PEOPLE HELP. I'm going through my DV tape rips and I found one of a Spaceworld presentation but I can't tag the year. We've got Yamauchi (???), Miyamoto showing off the original Celda trailer to polite applause, and Iwata talking about Pikmin. Is this '01?
Am I crazy or are any of these fine nonexistent ladies from the Atlus banger PRIMAL IMAGE
Here's an elevation graph of the return trip, 33km total. Cons: Low max speed of 18kph, butt hurts after 1 hour Pros: Scales unhinged Japanese mountain roads like they weren't even there, only used 50% of battery
Brm brm brm halfway there, nothing stops the Yamaha PAS Crew
I'm calling it, the store brand beers you can get from Don Quixote are great. They're coming out of somewhere in Vietnam and deliver A+ cost performance.
This is me after procuring my PS2 reservation at around 2am somewhere near Hirakata at a Toys R Us. The manager showed up, said we were all maniacs, gave us these tags and told us to go home and sleep. 39,799 JPY was a hell of a lot of money in 2000.
I've been playing the heck out of the classic KING OF CHICAGO, and after growing up on the Apple IIGS/Amiga version, what in GOD'S NAME is going on in the original Mac version!?
I am an ex-loc guy so it took me about a week to write all of the translator's notes for our mostly untranslatable script; the vast majority of the comments are me apologizing for jokes about umlauts, explaining Pennsylvania Dutch slang, and basically throwing my hands in the air
Got this Switch 2 vertical grip 3D printed in honor of Joe @gamesack.net , thanks for the splendid work @allymobbs.bsky.social!
Q: How to make katsudon tastier A: Cover it with ground meat
I went out to buy milk but I wound up biking home with a 550 yen color CRT
The tunnel networks connecting the buildings are cool as hell, sadly I could not locate the Tomb of the Unknown Tool
I am in Boston right now for PAX East and did a trip to MIT to explore; classic game company Infocom (among others) came out of here and it was awesome to see places that were referenced in games like Lurking Horror (like the Infinite Corridor)
Off-model Pokemon, at E3 1998 the Nintendo booth would fire out a couple dozen of these from a giant Pikachu every twenty minutes and it turned into a riot. They had to stop doing it because people were getting knocked over.
Accolade kept sending me shit despite the fact that I would give their games terrible scores. These dudes were basically the kings of junkets and promotional goods. The money must have been coming from somewhere.
