☄️ 169P/NEAT last night close to the globular cluster M13. The first image is tracked to the stars and shows the comet as a very faint trail at the center (maybe invisible due to compression). However, the 15 mag comet is clearly visible when stacked at the comet's motion. 🔭 S50 image.
Tonight's comet photometry observing plan. Note the close approach of 169P to M13. ☄️🔭
Film you’ve watched more than six times Hard Mode : No Star Trek, Star wars, LOTR, any Marvel, Disney or Ghibli
Attitude of now at least 28% of Germans: "We don't give a shit about climate protection. We want prosperity!"
Politicians caring more for fossil fuels instead for the effects of global warming deserve no respect.
Last night's photometry run for several comets showed the fragment for comet C/2023 R1 (PANSTARRS) for the first time. The comet is past perihelion and currently 3.6 au from the Sun. 🔭☄️
Transcribing a 16th century ☄️ handwriting is fun & frustrating. You can stare at a word for hours & fail in despair and then, suddenly, it clicks & you can read it. It's like these 3D images where you have to focus somewhere else. Ofc it does not help that there was no agreed spelling. 🔭 #histastro
☄️ 169P/NEAT yesterday night with the S50. I measured 15.8 mag and a 0.4' coma. The comet will reach perihelion at 0.6 au on Sep 21. P = 4.2 years. It might reach 10 mag during perigee in mid-August and will then be in the sun's glare. 🔭
☄️ 10P/Tempel on July 6, 2026, 20:56 UT, 12x120sec. 12"/3.6 ASA Astrograph ASI 6200, 8m5, coma 28‘, dust trail >1° in PA 264° and 86° © 2026 Gerald Rhemann, Michael Jäger fg-kometen.vdsastro.de/pix/test/bil... The dust trail is really impressive!
Nice Saturday hike with some mushrooms showing off. Probably: False Puffball (Stäublings-Schleimpilz), Birch Woodwart (Vielgestaltige Kohlenbeere), Yellow Orange Fly Agaric (Gelber Fliegenpilz) 🍄 #fungifriends
Spent the day reading in 16th century Prognostica and Practica Teutsch for the #Cometography 1 revision. A much needed distraction from modern news. Looking forward to my next time travel. ☄️🔭 #histastro
Finally managed to obtain a copy for a reasonable price. 🔭☄️ #histastro
How many comets were discovered by Jean Louis Pons? Spoiler: A lot! comethunter.de/pons.html Not bad for the janitor of Marseille observatory? ☄️🔭
Again, the temperature record for Germany was pulverised today (41.5° C, 106.7° F), and it is just June! Our sensor also shows a record (of course not according to the IMO rules, but still). We're so f#@&ed. #hitze #klimawandel #climatechange
Just found in the Astronomische Nachrichten; no. 4225, of 1908 Jan 1: A meteor trail of strange shape, seen on Nov 3, 1896 in Flagstaff, AZ. Would that be visible today, it'll probably be hyped as - no, won't say it... 🔭
Tonight's imaging run of several ☄️w/ the S50 produced a nice image of the HII emission nebula Sh 2-101, aka the Tulip Nebula. Buried somewhere in the stars is the trail of ☄️ C/2024 J3 (ATLAS). For photometry I only stack the green channel images on the comet's motion which does not look that nice. 🔭
Nice Sunday hike in the Westerwald Mts at 30° C and high humidity. But much more bearable in the woods. Found the first porcini of the year (will be dried as spice) and a beautiful stinkhorn. 🍄 #fungifriends
He's right. I haven't seen such guys in my neighborhood for quite some time.
To throw money in the greedy throat of one of humanity's greatest enemies is a telling sign why our species will destroy itself.
I'm in heaven! A place that breathes astronomy and history. Hamburg Observatory in Bergedorf. So many great names, discoveries and telescopes. Love it. ☄️🔭 #histastro
From comets-ml: Two fascinating images of comet 220P/McNaught from its current outburst. Left by Michael Jäger & Gerald Rhemann from Farm Tivoli/Namibia. Right Roger Hellot from Chile Nice thin tail and bow shock are apparent. (Details and source of images in ALT text) 🔭☄️
