Crownsville by Rodney Barnes and Eia Bonetti

The past comes back to haunt the city of Annapolis in this chilling tale of madness, ghosts, painful histories of racial exploitation, and the undead. Prolific screenwriter and no stranger to horror Barnes (Killadelphia) and illustrator Bonetti (Star Wars: Darth Vader) combine their talents in this tale of mixed tropes that still feels wholly original as Paul, a newspaperman, and Mike, a seasoned homicide detective, descend upon Crownsville Hospital to investigate the mysterious death of a guard. Other questions are raised as Paul realizes his ties to the horrors committed at the hospital in the name of serving the country run deep, and both he and Mike find themselves, as well as the National Guard, running in fear as those horrors awaken. Filled with various ghosts and undead creatures throughout, Bonetti's art mesmerizes, as some pages appear as calm and beautiful as murals and others grotesque and photorealistic, but every panel is bathed in shadows. Even flashbacks get their own unique color palette and style.
With a deft sense of pace, Barnes keeps the emotions raw as readers come to know these men and how they are affected by institutional injustices from the past. Readers will appreciate the real-world references with a zombie cinema bent. Fans of Chuck Brown, David F.
Walker, and Sanford Greene's Bitter Root will devour this book and its dark beauty and social commentary and will likely want more.

Teens will enjoy this chilling vampire tale from cartoonist team
Boothby (Sparks!, 2018) and Guerra (Y: The Last Man). Jen and Dante, two snowboarding daredevils, and their videographer, Bev, take to snowy hills for some good content. They quickly find themselves trapped with strangers in an isolated part of the forest and stranded on top of a cabin, because there is something deadly in the snow.
Something that burrows, unseen, until it's too late. The art here is perfect for this story, including character designs and detailed scenery.
The blues, whites, blacks, and occasional bloody reds really sell the atmosphere. Though some of the suspense is sacrificed for pace, the writing and characterization help move the cinematic terror along through familiar zombie-survival-movie beats. This is horror with a simple premise, like a junior version of 30 Days of Night, and since the story focuses on tension over gore in its spare but moody artwork, teens and even some middle-graders will find it enjoyable.
