Level IV (Level 4) plates are the highest grade of bullet-resistant inserts for body armor, designed specifically to stop high-powered rifle rounds, including armor-piercing bullets. Think of a Level IV plate as a "hard shield" that you slide into a vest. While soft vests (like those police often wear under their shirts) are meant for handguns, Level IV plates are heavy-duty gear designed for the most extreme threats.
These plates are tested to stop a single hit from a .30-06 armor-piercing rifle round—a bullet designed to punch through metal. If it can stop that, it can generally stop almost any common rifle round.
Unlike flexible "soft armor," these are rigid. They are usually made of high-tech ceramic (like a very tough bathroom tile) backed by layers of strong plastic or composite materials. When a bullet hits a Level IV ceramic plate, the ceramic intentionally shatters to "eat" the bullet's energy and blunt its tip, while the backing catches the fragments.
Bottom line: If you get hit with a 30.06 AP round and you're not wearing L-IV plate, it's going to fuck up your whole day. IF, OTOH, you get hit with 30.06 AP and you ARE wearing L-IV plate...
Yeah, it's still going to fuck up your whole day, BUT! You'll survive the experience.
