First is smoked tri tip with my grandma’s masa recipe and the second is pepper and tri-tip with my red recipe. I rolled these and you can tell because they got that “rustic charm” I’m famous for. Whole family got involved and it took two days, and some prayers to Tzitzimitl, but we have tamales.

Two smaller, kinda misshapen beef tamales with steak poking out of the end on a plate. A thick green sauce with seeds sits on top of them.

A larger, darker colored tamale with guacamole on top. This one is rougher and kinda falling apart.

Getting an email that a five year old post making fun of Ben Shapiro’s fear of WAP received a warning label now is so fucking funny. It got like 12 likes and it’s so old I had almost forgotten how pathetic Shapiro was when that song got released.

Foodie road trip 🚗🍗🍜🌮🧁 I know it’s what Caldyr would enjoy most. A long drive, amazing snacks, and I know where to get the best cute desserts in Portland. Burgers at Tillamook for dinner and sunset on the coast with THC popsicles for Vanth. PNW paradise. #AwesomeCharacters

Caldyr switched from a magical plane of existence to ours, so she doesn’t know much about Earth life and Vanth takes it upon herself to coach Caldyr on pop culture. (And Caldyr should watch Scooby for sure, she’s gonna love Velma.) #WIPSnips

“Can you sense the body?”
“Only if you ask me like I’m Lassie,” Vanth said.
“I’ve got no idea who that is.”
“Fine, fine. How about like Scooby-Doo?”
“Again, I’m drawing a total blank.”
“I…” Vanth pointed down the hall. “It’s over there. We actually do need to hang out tonight. I’ve got a cartoon that’s gonna change your life.”

Little bit of a fight between Caldyr and Isengrim. She can’t win this fight, but it won’t be for lack of trying. #WIPSnips

Caldyr still had bullets, but she felt the power grow and barely dodged a large, dark blur as it flew at her.
Isengrim.
The god charged her with a sword out and godly speed in his heavy steps. Close enough to choke on his stench now, the massive wolf loomed over her. A giant shadow of death blocking out the streetlights above. He kicked and she dived again, rolling to the left. Isengrim followed her, slamming the sword into the ground. The cement exploded under his attack, breaking a new pothole in the road.
Caldyr dropped the pistol and pulled her revolver, emptying all 5 rounds into Isengrim point blank. And the bullets shattered into bits against his large chest.

He paused. “Some of this might get staticky.”
“Staticky?” Caldyr asked.
“The Babel Curse,” he said. “Keep gods from spilling secrets to mortals and mortals who know the secrets from spilling to other mortals.”
“How does that work?”
“Like I can tell you that Ares is a cutie patootey, or that Safkhet is the hottest living goddess, but then if I say…” And his voice broke into static. Pure, unfiltered static, not unlike a badly tuned radio.
“I see.”
He said something else in static, but his voice cleared. “So, you know some stuff. Like the New Pantheon?”

“Isengrim is always out to outdo me and win, finally. Part of the story is that no matter what he does, I always come out on top. It’s just his nature to lose to me. I am smaller and—”
“Small? You’re, like, giant. Massive just huge man.”
“I’m not that muscular and compared to most gods I’m middling. Isengrim is seven feet two inches. I’m barely 6’6.” He said. He seemed to maybe yawn, or maybe just move, and quick as a blink, a fox sat on Caldyr’s couch. “I am much smaller as a fox too,” he continued with his normal voice, “And he’s a big European gray wolf. Easily got 90 pounds on me.”
“Is your bare butt on my couch?” Caldyr asked incredulously.
“I turned into a small animal and that’s your concern?”
“Bare ass out on the couch is gross, I don’t care what type of sentient talking animal you are. Get your fox ass off my damned couch! You better clean it too. Nasty fucking thing.”
He turned into a human shape again and adjusted his coat with a huff. “It’s fine, foxes are very neat animals.”
“I know that’s a damned lie.”

Caldyr’s first appearance is building herself in the prologue of her first story, Caldyr Prayers Solves the Tybalt Parable. Fairies congeal from emotions, magic, and elements in this world and have to put themselves together. It felt important to show and it was fun to make up. #AwesomeCharacters

First, in the darkness of that abysmal sea, a luminous heartorb grew. Fairies have little need for organs and the heartorb of an ocean fairy does everything their bodies require. Process food into magic, grow magic from leftover magic; the organ can think with magic, move the body with magic, and knew magic the way a brain knows itself. Even before the fairy formed her future ocean blue body, she could name every piece. Her neck, thick and a little short, but she was made for swimming and in the water compact is everything. The head came next, growing far too round then adding a little shape before long feathery gill tendrils formed from the excess. She breathed through those, so no need for a nose, really. She skipped that bit, creating slits for eyes and stealing a little loose moonlight for their glow. A mouth formed and lips, then the teeth. Shark’s teeth, carved from sand she collected herself from the water and pressed into opal-like stone.
The fairies back itched as long, leathery wings formed around her. Arms matched them. She added strength, stealing it from the tides itself. Her legs would need to be strong as well, she’d be pure water and weigh as much. Almost a gallon and only 7 inches tall.
“I am kinda short. Whoa,” she said. “Rough voice.”

Caldyr’s stories actually start out with a knock on her door so it was an easy choice for today’s prompt. #WIPSnips

But peace only lasts so long and in minutes, she’d never know the same peace again. Of course, we’re never the same person for long and we never get the same experiences regardless, not really. Caldyr would come to know that, but she’d never pinpoint the change herself. It’s now though, right now in this exact moment, when a hand knocked on her door, sending the pieces of her little life into the floor, shattering them with a cacophony of glass no one could possibly hear.
And Caldyr’s old world died with the echoes.
“Hello?” she asked without fully waking.
Another knock, another rap of the hard knuckles so drenched in the heart of chaos themselves. The knocker tapped out a tune, a little rhythm. Five taps, then a pause, before two quick taps.
Caldyr sat up.
“Who the fuck is knocking melodically at my door?”

The first description of Reynardine in the series. He’s a hard guy to describe but I still have fun trying to capture his vibe. #BookishTues

Caldyr hung up and went to her door. The same red hair showed in the peephole, but now she could make out the stubble of his beard and the crooked slit of his grin. Sharp, like a fox’s. He wasn’t human, he’d been a story about a fox named Reynardine, and those stories became real. Somehow he’d become a god and now he was on her doorstep, one blind eye sparking with silly jokes even in the white and one amber eye even more daft with humor. With life. With the chaos of all the love and trickery in the world. Powerful stuff and everywhere, one way or the other.
He was such a powerful god, he’d probably barely notice being shot, but her neighbors might complain, so instead Caldyr just opened her door.

Sal tossed her another card.
A five. Caldyr bit back any natural reaction and grimaced.
Athena took another card as well.
Thor folded.
Then Dagda.
Caldyr nodded as he did, like she’d been considering it herself.
Sal took the bait, raising the pot again.
Caldyr checked her watch and matched the bet. Sal only had a small pile of chips left.
She matched him and watched as Athena did the same.
Fenrir, however, did something unexpected. He went all in.
Caldyr grimaced, for real this time. Her going all in might give the game away. Sal pushed all in too.
Caldyr mocked reluctance as she moved her chips to the middle of the table and Sal dealt the river. A king of hearts.
Fenrir’s tail wagged, Caldyr heard it thumping the sides of his chair. His excitement fed into her own, she’d love to take the smarmy dog down a peg or two and kicking his ass at poker would feel good.
“Calling it,” he said, dropping his hand.

I have so very very many examples of water in my stories because Caldyr is an ocean fairy but I really like this as an intro. #WIPSnips

Caldyr Annan Prayers tilted her whole body when she turned corners. She couldn’t help it, something about turning left or right made her tilt. In truth, ocean fairies are meant for fighting tides in deep waters, so her body naturally bent to steady her path. In heavy waters, she’d be agile and quick. On land, she stumbled over her own ankles at least once a week.

I have very few uses of the word but Caldyr ofc has my favorite. She’ll throw an expletive in any word and it’s one reason I love writing her dialogue so much. It doesn’t always work but she is kinda awkward so I run with it. #WIPSnips

“Flattery doesn’t work when you do it because I know it’s all just that. There’s no way that ego leaves room for anyone else.”
Reynardine laughed and asked dramatically, “Is that why you hate me? Because I have an appropriate ego? You should try it sometime, ego can be good for you.”
Caldyr stopped and considered it. “I don’t know. I just know that the only thing you’re proud of is yourself.”
“I guess that’s true. Or usually it is,” he said. “Even I don’t know what’s really the truth sometimes or if I’m telling it. It does vary.”
“Fantastic. Sen-fucking-sational. I just love how you imply I’m being lied to during the longest story of my life.”
“Would I go to all this trouble just to lie to you?” Reynardine’s foxy face split into a wicked, grin that felt almost predatory until he winked.

I chose this bit over actual dragons because I just find it really amusing. I actually like Weezer and Imagine Dragons too, I don’t know why I write things like this. I guess Vanth is a bit picky about her music. #BookishTues

“I don’t even know Weezer.”
“Don’t stress, bluebird. No one will ask about your favorite Weezer song and the outfit will help with that.”
“Got it.”
“Maybe say Imagine Dragons too, just to be safe.”
“Oh, I like them actually.”
Vanth grimaced and a put hand to her chest as if the words cut clear to her heart. “You gotta learn to overlook some things in family members. You won’t be happy with everyone’s personal choices all the time and that’s okay.”

This scene includes warm but also Caldyr barely knowing Vanth and trying to give her a place to stay gives me the warm fuzzies. At this point, Caldyr can barely keep a roof over her own head, but she doesn’t want Vanth to live alone in a van by a river anymore. #WIPSnips

“You said the water being on would help you sleep,” she muttered.
“I don’t think it does,” she said. “Why did we drink all that?”
“Fun. You told me to sleep here too,” Vanth said. “I was gonna leave after I dropped you off but you were really insistent. You said it was too cold for a person to be sleeping in their car.”
“It is.”
“Girl, it’s California in September.”
Caldyr shrugged. She did think Vanth should stop living in her van—although probably not in the one-bedroom apartment Caldyr barely kept a hold of—but for all the magic on the west coast, she couldn’t remember a bit of that conversation.
She did remember a lot of giggling and warm, friendly feelings last night. And some singing in the car. Reynardine did a mean Freddie Mercury because of course he did.

Vanth guides the dead so this counts. Reynardine talks a lot, but it’s rare for him to speak so highly and honestly about another being. Also this erratically, she’s missing in this story and his obvious worry helps guide Caldyr’s choice to help. #WIPSnips

“Vanth is as good as they come and then some.”
“Really?”
“Well, she hangs out with me.”
“Jury is out on how bad that is. Reynardine, I need the truth here. Is she a bad person?”
“Vanth is a psychopomp and a death goddess. She leads the dead to their final resting place and the job takes its toll. Still, she’s got a heart of gold and the will to make hard choices. She smokes a lot of weed and drinks too much and, in the darkest heart of war, she got so drunk she cheated on her true love. Losing her wife nearly destroyed her and I have no doubt Vanth would say it’s the worst thing she’s ever done. I’ve heard it from her lips in every form of curse a god knows, and that is a lot. She said she’s gone, but the kindness is still there. I’ve seen it. She has taken a bullet for her best friend and for a perfect stranger with the same speed and determination. People are complicated and gods, if possible, are even more so but she’s a decent person and a solid friend. A good one to me, and that’s not something that’s easy to be.”

“That’s not the most important thing right now,” Athena said. “One way we don’t make money is by being robbed of 100 thousand in bonds by a courier with apparently enough magical power to hide from gods.”
“Or lack of magical connection at all. Some people are so disconnected from their own souls that we can’t feel them with divine power.”
“Atheists?” Caldyr asked.
“No, usually conservatives,” Athena said.
Safkhet rolled her eyes. “Sometimes lack of soul just happens. Sometimes it’s evil people.”

Athena grimaced. “I know, it’s a saying , it’s a saying, but we really didn’t live off just nectar and ambrosia. And that’s chili verde. Most people just call it green sauce or salsa verde.”
“I think I might be in love with this verde salsa. Can I love a salsa and still be asexual?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve only got eyes for verde.”

“I thought you were gonna let Isengrim kill me?”
“You have to finish the story,” she said. “That’s the damned deal and I want my money.”

He wasn’t always that man, but I knew it was his destiny. I’d seen it years before he’d known it himself. Before even Merlin crawled out of whatever rat hole of a cave he was in to finagle himself a boy king.
Before that, when he was just a boy. My golden haired little brother. Atty.
And I was his dark haired protector. Momo. His sister with the too complicated name for his lispy mouth. For all his future skills, Atty was a bit of a dork in those days. That’s where our story starts really, with him on his back looking up at the bully that just punched him and me running in to magic the fucker up a tree for touching my kid brother.

Vanth is kind of my go to comedian. Being a psychopomp, a guide to the dead, it just felt right for her to be a joker. This is her first appearance and Caldyr’s first time meeting her. Right from the start, it’s just bad stoner jokes and worse references. So yeah, she’s great. #AwesomeCharacters

“Quick, if you get the pipe in my coat and give me a hit of weed, it’ll recharge my godly strength,” Vanth muttered weakly.
“I know that can’t possibly be true,” Caldyr said.
“It is,” Vanth insisted.
“It isn’t.”
“It might be.”
“I know it’s not.”
“Why not try it?”
“Just roll over, girlypop, you’re too close to the wall to get the cuffs.”
“How’d you find me?” Vanth asked. “And why?”
“I’m Caldyr Prayers,” she said. “I’m here to rescue you.”
“Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?”
“She says that first,” Caldyr told Vanth. “You missed your chance for the joke.”
“Okay, fine. Go outside, we’ll take it from the top.”

I used 3 three times and I might change that rent number. I didn’t even notice when I wrote it 😬 Although I do love this bit. Caldyr and Annabelle are both fairies which are pretty rare on the west coast and they are good friends but also very different people. #WIPSnips

Caldyr grabbed her cup and sat up enough to sip at the cheap swill. She did her best to bite down a reaction, but the liquor burnt on its way to offering some relief from the stressful day.
“You hissed?” Annabelle said.
“I’m drinking.”
“What? Battery acid?”
“Close,” she said. “It was 3 bucks for the big bottle with the handle.”
“Yikes,” Annabelle said. “Girl, you need those tips.”
She was 136 dollars and 53 cents short on rent so Annabelle spoke truer words than she knew. True enough to bring back that aching worry…
“I’m gonna start chugging this stuff so I better go,” Caldyr said.
“Please don’t,” she replied. “Goodnight, sweetwings.”
Caldyr grunted and ended the call.

No hoarse but there is some conversation about Caldyr learning to sing so she can go undercover in a musical. (She’s an ocean fairy, made up of water and magic, and she built her voice out of rough stormy winds and the sounds of a shipwreck.) #WIPSnips

Vanth cleared her throat and sang a few lines of
Pink Pony Club.
Caldyr gave in and sang the next line.
Reynardine drew air in through his teeth and
then exhaled slowly.
"See?" Caldyr stood up. "I suck. I'm not going to
be cast anyway."
"No, no," he said. "Your voice is... smoky. You...
you do need some work, but it was something."
"I sound a little gruff. You can say it."
"Gruff?" Vanth said. "You sound like a seagull
trying to imitate a car engine."
"Okay, wow, fuck you. I have a naturally low
voice, it comes with being an ocean fairy."
"No, no. A smoky bass could work for this, Reynardine said. "You're just struggling with tune. Sing deeper."

And surely one of numerous enemies will get their final revenge shortly after. I’ve pissed off a lot of people, from gods to kings to beggars and everyone between, and the motivated ones are not going to miss their chance. I wouldn’t, it’s a good shot to get some respect too. One way or another, I swear on my life I am going to die at midnight.”
Caldyr’s jaw hit the floor.
