Thirteen billion dollars. Publicly, about three hundred million of it can be traced arriving in the capital city Caracas.

The rest of it though? We have no idea where it is. Secretary Rubio told Senate Foreign Relations the arrangement was short-term, with the money in an account in Qatar. In April, the State Department said about three billion had gone back and that quarterly reports were coming. Since that, we’ve heard nothing else about it.

Meanwhile the President has said the money “will be controlled by me,” and that the United States is “making a lot of money” off Venezuelan oil.

Fishmeal and fish oil factories stripping the oceans for animal feed #ProtectTheOceans

For over 30 years, Senegalese fisherman Baye Biram, has made his living in the ocean. Now, it can barely sustain him. Baye is yet another victim of the fishmeal and fish oil factories' destructive fishing practices.

The reality he is faced with is devastating. The few fish still left in the water are being caught, ground into fishmeal, and shipped abroad to feed animals. As a result, he’s now forced to take increasingly dangerous risks in the deep sea for his daily catch.

Industrial trawlers have stripped the shore bare of the fish he could easily catch before. Putting a simple meal on the table for his family is becoming increasingly difficult.

This industrial plundering has devastating consequences. In Senegal, fish consumption has plummeted by nearly half, and young men are risking dangerous migration across the high seas toward Europe in a desperate bid to find work and feed their families.

But the communities are also fighting back. Through unyielding citizen mobilisation, they successfully shut down a destructive Kayar fishmeal factory in Kayar, Senegal.

Yet, without sustained legal and public pressure, these hard-won victories remain incredibly fragile – especially as the government continues to grant opaque licenses to foreign vessels.

The image, later highlighted by Defense Ministry advisor Serhii Sternenko, listed the following figures for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet:

Main combat ships: 33 total—4 destroyed, 8 damaged;

Landing ships: 34 total—15 destroyed, 10 damaged;

Auxiliary vessels: 23 total—3 destroyed, 9 damaged.

The figures provide one of the clearest official visual summaries released to date of Ukraine’s assessment of damage inflicted on Russia’s naval forces in the Black Sea during the war.

When the richest person on the planet, who owns one of the biggest social media platforms, spends his days and nights, even his own birthday, amplifying anti-migrant rhetoric, boosting far-right agitators, and promoting films that glorify vigilante violence as the answer to migration, he is not starting a debate – he is starting a fire.

Imagine the world’s most prominent Muslim used a platform they owned to promote a film celebrating violent revenge against white Europeans.

Imagine the protagonist’s targets were explicitly targeted because they were white, Christian or Jewish.

Would that Muslim public figure be defended as a champion of free speech?

Would they be praised for challenging political correctness and government censorship?

As Battah remarked to me, the media’s acceptance and deployment of such arbitrary vocabulary creates “artificial structures” and a sense of orderliness, when in reality “there’s no yellow lines, there’s no yellow, there’s no colors—these are just illegal invasions.” And because media are committed to sanitizing Israel’s behavior rather than questioning it, “colonization becomes normalized.”

As for why this fight started in the first place, the media can somehow never summon the energy to explain that Hezbollah owes its very existence to Israel’s apocalyptic 1982 invasion of Lebanon that killed tens of thousands of Lebanese and Palestinians, prompting the group’s formation. Indeed, Israel’s lengthy history of invading Lebanon—not to mention its 22-year occupation of the south of the country, which ended in its ignominious eviction by the Hezbollah-led Lebanese resistance—would seem to be pretty crucial context in terms of understanding the current war.

Almost none of these companies existed four years ago. They have emerged from a tech-literate civil society whose members changed their professions or their focus to help defend their country. I have met Ukrainian defense-company CEOs who come from financial services, architecture, politics. I met another one last weekend who had returned just that day from the front line. He told me he finds it useful to learn how soldiers are using his products, and how they might be improved.

The psychological war. For the past four years, the Kremlin has repeatedly told the Russian public that the war is going well, that Ukraine isn’t a real country, that victory is certain. But that’s hard to square with the panic that took hold of Moscow last month, when an annual military parade was shortened for fear it would be interrupted by Ukrainian drones. Nor does it square with the spectacular columns of black smoke that were billowing into the air on Wednesday morning, after Ukrainian drones hit a local refinery on the opening day of the Kremlin’s annual St. Petersburg economic forum.

Hamawy easily defeated second-place finisher Brad Cohen, who decried “his association” with terrorists – a reference to Hamawy’s testimony at the trial of Islamist militant Omar Abdel-Rahman in 1995. What his critics don’t mention is that Hamawy was a first-responder in New York on 9/11, treating victims of the terror attack on the Twin Towers, then deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2005 as a combat medic, and later rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the U.S. Army. Speaking with Zeteo’s Prem Thakker on the eve of the primary, Hamawy called the attacks on him “ridiculous” and an effort to distract from his efforts to fight “a genocide that’s happening right now, and real terrorism, and a terrorist state.”
