I very proud of myself for cooking the veal perfectly today. I do not always manage this, but today I pulled it off.
made a perfect summer bbq meal tonight after the skies cleared: Ontario veal chops with corn and potatoes from sosnicki organics. I get their CSA for half the year and it is truly incredible how different high-quality, fresh produce tastes from the usual stuff. good seasoning plus real charcoal.
above the fold on @ottawacitizen.com two days in a row: local institutions do stuff with AI 😒
extremely typical of our small-minded federal government: let's close the only imax 70mm theatre in the national capital region weeks before the biggest imax 70mm movie of all time due to "budget constraints" and then miss out on all the revenue and publicity that would have come from the odyssey 🙄
ok @thestar.com it is extremely Scots-Canadian-coded to spell McDonalds as MacDonalds—like truly an error only a Toronto newspaper could make—but for real, plz hire more editors!!!!
of course today, when the air quality in Toronto is EXTREMELY BAD, is an in-office day, and seemingly no one in HR or leadership has issued any advice about whether we can or should stay home on days when our sky is filled with wildfire smoke. love living in a climate emergency!!!
first seriously hot day in Ottawa this year and the power is out over the entire west end of the city, basically from Fisher out west as far as Stittsville. deja-vu from the derecho in 2022, when I first came to realize exactly how fragile our grid is here!!!!
I showed this to @tiomoid.bsky.social who immediately recognized it from the rock 😂😂😂
I simply don't understand how/why someone would choose to be like this???!!!! these are places I stayed, for more than one night, I know for a fact that they neither had windows that opened wide, nor AC. anyway instant block.
noticed this gem on the @westendphoenix.bsky.social calendar today! I googled and it seems they were, in fact, found and returned to the zoo.
I dunno, man, probably not gonna trust a company to do "precision painting" when you can't even spell "precision" correctly on your poster
the people-watching is nearly as good as the blossom-watching
I love the juxtaposition of the blossoms and the brutalist architecture
went to check out the cherry blossoms at robarts library on my lunch break and they sure were blossoming!!
the app says we have left but THE APP IS WRONG still haven't boarded 🙃🙃🙃🙃
I am so fucking angry about the stupid new AI summaries google maps is ramming down everyone's throats but the exhortation to "bring a sharp knife" to a public place did make me laugh. can't wait for our first google-motivated stabbing in the bakery lineup!!
@thestar.com is interviewing famous torontonians about what they would do as mayor. the first round of interviews contains a lot of great ideas, but without a doubt this is my personal favourite:
nice! I was gifted some calamansi by my Pilates instructor (he has a huge indoor calamansi tree) and blended the whole fruit into my hamantashen dough this year
A photo I took of said chateauneuf 17 years ago. studying the schism in medieval music and French history classes made a huge impression on me and Avignon was one of the places I desperately wanted to go see the summer I graduated from undergrad. today is making me so nostalgic for that trip!!
tip #7: turn your matzah brei into chilaquiles!! this was much tastier than the plain matzah brei I had a couple of days ago
those are my tips for now. this thread brought to you by the Ten Commandments on tv, kfp fruit slices, a can of bubly, and my dad's a-million-year-old port that he hoarded for decades and never drank before he died
tip #4: it is permissible, even encouraged, to bulk up your meals with a soup and knadel (aka matzah balls) course. I buy the mix in bulk and make a huge batch of stock right before the holiday.
tip #2: matzah pizza is your friend. it probably accounts for at least a quarter of my meals during passover. buy a bottle of pizza squeeze and a bag of shredded cheddar. construct matzah pizza as you wish, then bake in toaster oven for 5–7 mins at 375 F till the cheese is bubbly.
this is why I'm not a Costco member: I don't wish to have ready access to vacuum-packed pieces of Schwartz's smoked meat that I can steam and slice at home
