Something smells rotten at APD.

A witness to the shooting, who declined to give his name, showed Alaska Public Media security footage of the incident. The footage appears to show the man sitting in front of a light pole before standing up and walking away from a nearby police vehicle. The man then fell to the ground before officers walked near him. A time stamp on the footage shows the man falling forward, away from any officers shown in the video, about 10 minutes after officers were called.

Margaret Stock, an Alaska-based immigration attorney and a member of the legal team for an elderly Syrian man who was told he would be on the flight to the Central African Republic, said he has scars all over his body from being tortured in his home country. He feared returning to Syria because he is a Sufi Muslim, she said, and a U.S. immigration judge agreed that those fears were credible.

The man, she added, suffers from diabetes — a grave risk in the Central African Republic, where medical care, even for routine ailments, is extremely limited.

“He’s not going to be able to access his medication, and he’s going to die,” Stock said. “And they know he’s going to die if they send him there.”

The relevant question is not whether people can afford more on average, it’s whether they can afford the specific entry fees of the middle class: a home, a degree, and healthcare. These are not average goods, they’re gatekeeping goods and their prices did not track average inflation. You cannot buy a house with inflation-adjusted purchasing power. You buy it with dollars. And the dollars required grew two to three times faster than the dollars earned.

They do not measure what work delivers. The official unemployment rate counts whether a job exists. It says nothing about whether that job provides retirement security or the ability to eat reliably. The instruments were designed to measure the presence of jobs. They were never designed to measure whether jobs work. In 1933, the question was where the jobs went. In 2026, the question is what’s the point of having a job if one can’t afford to live?

We need to stop fucking privatizing everything in the military. Chow can be good if you actually fully fund it with the money you take out of enlisted paychecks instead of vanishing it into thin air. Still waiting on an inspector general to hold anybody accountable for the thievery.

Supervisors reportedly kept the information that somebody had died from other employees for several hours from many workers, sending staff home at the end of their 3:45 pm break. That means workers, including ones who knew about the death, had to keep working for several hours following the incident.

“Truthfully, I now have even less respect for our leadership team than I did before, which I didn’t know was possible,” one worker pseudonymously identified as RJ told the Western Edge. “It makes me feel more ashamed to work there knowing that people can drop dead and we have to carry on knowing it doesn’t matter to the higher ups, and everyone is replaceable.”

Supervisors did respond to messages on a employee app called My Voice, offering shaken workers counseling services and unpaid leave. However, Sam noticed they weren’t paid for a full shift after being sent home early.

ICE loves gassing kids.

The bullet that hit Mr. Sosa-Celis’s upper leg ended up lodged inside the house, near a playpen used by a child in the downstairs unit, according to court records and photos shared with The Times. The bullet also left a hole in the front door. Mr. Sosa-Celis was not seriously hurt.

Just after the shooting that night, ICE officials used tear gas to force the couples to leave the house. The adults were taken into custody. The two children went to stay with family members.

Talking from his father's home in the Netherlands, after being deported in mid-March, Ramsingh told NPR he also heard guards betting on which detainee was going to die by suicide.

"This is so screwed up that you're trying to bet on our lives, you know, with these other officers thinking this s--- is funny," Ramsingh said. For him, it was personal — he told NPR he talked three detainees out of killing themselves.

The Justice Department has withheld some Epstein files related to allegations that President Trump sexually abused a minor, an NPR investigation finds. It also removed some documents from the public database where accusations against Jeffrey Epstein also mention Trump.

Some files have not been made public despite a law mandating their release. These include what appear to be more than 50 pages of FBI interviews, as well as notes from conversations with a woman who accused Trump of sexual abuse decades ago when she was a minor.

You know how there’s a theory that we have fewer serial killers now because we’ve successfully limited the general public’s exposure to lead? Basically, the hypothesis is that widespread lead poisoning back in the early to mid-1900s caused a lot of brain damage and aggression in people, with the most extreme cases becoming serial killers. Less lead exposure, fewer people at that far end to become serial killers.

But then we read about state troopers writing with Sharpies on people so they can track which team made the most arrests, or you read about them using the arrest of one person to lure the people who care about them out and then laughing about it, and I can’t help but wonder if these extreme lead-poisoning cases haven't so much decreased as just found jobs that will pay them to dehumanize people and take pleasure in inflicting pain. Maybe there aren’t fewer of them. Maybe they’re just in places where they don’t get counted.

In June, Wong was disappeared into the basement of a facility in San Ysidro for "processing" and placed into solitary confinement for 21 hours by federal immigration agents. She was taken while she was at the Linda Vista Apartments during federal immigration agent activity. She was not found sooner because there is nowhere to register U.S. Citizens in the facilities system, she says.

She says that federal immigration agents told her that they could do anything they wanted to her and that she was no longer in the United States. She also says the agents mentioned the death of a man in detention, then said, “Yeah, you know, crazy things happen.”
