This is just making me think of the Jikook bathroom scene from Boy In Luv... (an iconic moment in queer cinema btw)

I ended up writing out some more thoughts – sorry for the wall of text, I'm not good at being brief so it's easier to post this way 😅

I see what you mean and don’t totally disagree. It’s so complicated…

I think them only being nominated/winning in the ‘Asian’ category would be outrageous and ARMY will cause a huge fuss if that happens. We might celebrate the milestone of having any award for an artist from Korea (KDH was a Netflix production starring Korean Americans so it’s not quite the same), but we’d simultaneously be *loudly* criticising it and using the opportunity to highlight the discourse. We’d make sure the Grammys don’t come out of that looking good.

To some extent we’ll be led by how BTS react. Maybe they’ll boycott that award themselves? However I think it might be easier for Western fans to turn our noses up at this tainted ‘separate but equal’ award, while BTS as Asian artists might not feel they have the luxury of rejecting the opportunity. If they choose to submit for that category and accept that award, ARMY are obviously going to support them even as we simultaneously trend #scammys and #GrammysAreRacist while watching bootleg streams, and then celebrate when Bangtan’s post-show live gets more views.

I guess I just don’t think it’s realistic to expect people to react differently. Of course we’re going to complain bitterly and call out the racism (in hope of creating some kind of press attention and public awareness to push for actual progress). At the same time if BTS choose to submit for that category of course we’d celebrate a historic win, even if the taste is more bitter than sweet.

I’m not sure what the alternative is… should we not complain about it? Or if they get a nomination/win should we refuse to congratulate them or watch their acceptance speech because that’s ‘seeking validation’? It’s not that I don’t share your frustration, I’m just not sure what kind of different action we’re supposed to take here.

I had some strong feelings about the use of generative AI in the humanities 😅 (hope this does some small part to help persuade higher-ups who are trying to push this stuff into the museum space)

Response to survey about genAI use in museums and archives:

Generative AI has no benefit whatsoever in the humanities, it achieves nothing other than removing human jobs, disrupting human connection, and undermining human knowledge and understanding. Image generators consume massive amounts of energy (despite greenwashing claims) to create low-quality meaningless slop. LLMs cannot think, reason, or fact check, they simply algorithmically select words based on the probability of those words appearing near each other in various circumstances.

There is currently a crisis in journalism, education, and academic publishing caused by LLM-hallucinated misinformation, but beyond that there is the subtle twisting of perspective and analysis caused by handing this work to a machine that cannot actually think, cannot understand, cannot synthesize information, and simply does not (and will never) have the capacity for understanding context, constructing arguments with intention, or viewing things from any kind of perspective.

We DO NOT need any of this, we already have human beings!!! Humans already have every capability to think, reason, communicate, and create art. There is literally nothing to be gained (and so much to be lost) by removing the human element and handing it over to an algorithm.

Any institution which uses generative AI instantly loses my respect. This shows contempt for the very foundation of knowledge gathering and the essence of your work. Using generative AI instantly shows everyone that you have no idea what you're doing, and you have a deep lack of understanding of the field you work in. It's unprofessional, but beyond that it shows contempt for every person who has any involvement with your institution – from visitors, to staff, to the countless people from past generations whose real lived experiences, efforts, and thoughts are recorded in archives and museums. Generative AI poisons the lifeblood of this field. Do not use it.

Beyond that, it's clear this prejudice has held BTS back at a structural level. These are a couple of random receipts I happened to have to hand. Compare the ABSURD difference of sales vs. radio play for each artist. If streams seem low, that's because our streams are constantly slashed in half.

Data-heavy spreadsheet showing a breakdown of charting points for various popular singles. The notable areas highlighted show that Like Crazy by BTS member Jimin had 115k sales points, while the next most popular song had 9.5k sales points. Meanwhile all other artist have between 30-100 million radio points, while Jimin got 0.1 million radio points. This complete lack of radio play brings Jimin's smash hit single down to no.8 when organically it should have been no.1

It's too difficult to 'prove' endless microaggressions, or more overt incidents scattered across time and space, but this call-out from DJ Big Reid confirmed something many fans were already well aware of. There are countless receipts of Western media/industry being xenophobic against BTS.

The few times BTS did get played on the radio we literally sent flowers and cupcakes to the DJs. While some DJs were lovely, others were *incredibly* rude and aggressive for no reason. I know ARMY have a 'toxic' rep, but it's hard not to get defensive when you're constantly treated like this...

The other day I started making a list of BTS/ARMY memes that broke containment... for example many people know classic twitter meme "lets do it baby I know the law" but they may not remember the follow-up (this person was Bangtan-curious and had crossover with ARMY at the time).

I saw this just the other day... even if some people are ok with the joke, a lot aren't (there were many comments on this post from psychotic people saying they find it hurtful). I hope people take a moment to think about that, even if it's something you're very used to saying.

I need to lose my mind over crop top seokjin but I'm already seeing AI edits going around so watch out! These two images are clearly identical down to the phone in the foreground, but the edit looks hyper in-focus, with subtle differences on the face and weird melty details in the background.

I was surprised how much I liked Yoongi's short hair, thinking how it has a kind of vintage style to it, then suddenly realised he looks a lot like this character from Slam Dunk (his favourite manga). I haven't read Slam Dunk but it turns out this guy's even the shooting guard!

Jimin as pokemon, according to Namjoon Jimin and Chimbaru (the pokemon is called that in Korean so he was making a pun, but also it lowkey looks like Jimin when his rage mode is activated 😅) As far as I know the other members didn't get captured in pokemon form...
