just driving along in suburbia, on an errand, and: grass ducks! I genuinely thought they might be lawn ornaments at first! (a trio of ducks a nestling into a bright green suburban lawn. no water source or pool is anywhere to be seen. they're just....hanging out. sort of meditatively.)

This is....enough news stress for one morning. Let's have some pet pictures to keep our sanity going. Here's my lovely cat-cow, the elder girl Lucy, at rest on our bed, to get us started. MOAR PET PICTURES.

A black and white female cat (looking DAMN good for being 21!) lies at her ease on a white summer coverlet at the foot of a bed. Both front paws are stretched out in front of her, and her head is gently cocked to one side - she's listening while I tell her how pretty she is and to stay still for the picture.

Joe Jackson at the Downtown Joy tonight in New Orleans

Joe on keyboards, obviously - he's explaining background about one of the new songs 'End of the Pier', because it involves a bunch of British seaside Victoriana that Americans might not otherwise get (two sets of drummers. His longtime bassist, Graham, and out of shot, another guitarist - who was wearing a green fedora with feather and a purple suit, gold shirt. Very Mardi Gras. They fucking killed. (and yes, the crowd was very over 50 and verrrrrrrrrry white)(but DAMN it was a good show)

I have seven sibs (between steps and half sibs, one ONE side of my family), and thank goodness, because we rented Dad a Bentley and chauffeur for an afternoon today, and WOW.

Our Dad in the Bentley (no, he was not allowed to drive. Insurance for a random guy of 89 was PROHIBITIVE. Hence chauffeur - we weren't *just* being fancy!). (A white haired and bearded guy going a big thumbs up, big smile, in the deeply red leather interior of a convertible Bentley sedan)

from the Guggenheim description: "Maine Jellett was the first practitioner of non-
objective art in Ireland. While in Paris in the
1920s, Jellett studied and later collaborated with
Albert Gleizes, an artist associated with Cubism
in the previous decade who then turned to greater
abstraction. Both were devout: Jellett, an Anglican,
and Gleizes, a Catholic. Their commitment to
Christianity and to early Christian, particularly
Celtic, imagery led them to produce spiritually
inspired work. Jellett evolved a personalized
abstraction premised on dislike shapes and
radiating circles, which she often rotated on the
picture plane to foster spiraling movement-
devices that reflect Orphist principles. Her devel-
opment of the idiom well into the 1930s, initially
sparked by her interaction with Gleizes, illustrates
how artists transmit tenets over time and across
geographies. In the summer of 2024, the Ulster
Museum cleaned Painting and discovered Jellett's
signature, indicating it had been displayed
upside down. The work is exhibited here with
the artist's intended orientation,"

From the Guggenheim information plaque: "In 1908 Mondrian began to visit an artist colony
in Domburg, the Netherlands, where he was
introduced to Post-Impressionist art. He responded
to its flattened forms, assertive brushwork, and
bold color in series of paintings of windmills,
church, and dunes that have nothing in common
with his realist landscapes. In this ambitious
picture -also known as Dune VI-Mondrian
flattened the space by filling most of the canvas
with a dune brushed in swaths of orange-yellow
and babv blue. The painting asserts its autonomy
from nature, but the seaside remains recognizable
as the dune clearly lies in front of strips of sea
and sky. Critics still found it too large and flat, but
Mondrian soon rejected even such reduced spatial
illusion and the absence of vertical counterweights
to the painting's breadth."

"Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a
product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.

There are things in the world that are more important than money. The fact that you seem not to believe this, that you seem to think any motive beyond ruthless acquisitiveness is fake, dishonest, or childish, is the heart of your problem. Your attitude is not by any means unique to tech, but the scale of capital concentrated in the tech industry makes the attitude--this confusion of an adolescent will to power for mature,
undeluded realism- uniquely treacherous. You can't build products that serve humanity while viewing every human good other than your own aggrandizement as bullshit. Thus, tech's internal problems can't be fixed unless the people running the industry change their outlook on a deep level (unlikely) or are somehow outmaneuvered as wiser heads
reform the market to deprioritize perpetual growth (maybe Paul Konerko is working on this?)

The recipe and chicken discussion are from the 1958 spiral bound cookbook from Don's Seafood & Steak House in Lafayette. Wild.

The page reads:

"From the affectionate use of the nickname "poulette" (little chicken)
we can rightly assume the Acadians' fondness for that pride of the barn-
yard "le poulet"

Until very recent years, with the advent of mass packaging and flash freezing, all chickens were purchased live and carried home in a brown paper sack being held by the feet, to assume their inglorious
positions on the chopping block, or even more ignominiously, to have
their necks wrung!

Europeans in small provinces would still marvel at the ease
with which an American housewife can choose her chicken. No examining the bill or pin feathers; this has all been accomplished by far more trained eyes than those of the average housekeeper. She need only pick up a neat cellophane wrapped package of whatever chicken parts she desires. White meat addicts and drumstick lovers can now have their fills, for today's chicken can consist of five legs, three breasts or any combination which suits your fancy. This is modern flexibility at its finest!"

CHICKEN GUMBO
1 4-1b. dressed hen
2 cups chopped onions
cup chopped celery
cup all-purpose flour
2 gallons warm water
Gumbo filé
cup cooking oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup green onion tops and
parsley, chopped
Salt, black pepper and Cayenne
(red pepper)
Cut up hen and season generously with salt, black pepper and Cay-
enne. Fry in oil in heavy pot over medium heat until golden brown
Pour excess oil out of pot and save for roux recipe.
Add chopped
onions and celery to chicken and cook slowly in uncovered pot,
until onions are wilted.
Make roux, (see page 11 for directions) using the excess oil in
which the chicken was fried.
Dissolve roux in 2 gallons of warm water. Add garlic. Then add
the roux mixture to the chicken. Boil the combined mixture slowly
in uncovered pot until chicken is tender. Serve in soup plates.

J. K. Potter's dust jacket illustration from The Subterranean Press limited edition hardcover collection of the best of short works about The Company. The cover illustration is from a short story about Facilitator Joseph and how he keeps an eye on his mortal family connections for hundreds of years...or at least, the Virgin Mary figurine is a reference to it. Though there's also a Joseph story in which he creates a face vision, so........maybe? Peonies and peony-tulips in a riot of soon-to-be-opened color for our Mama this weekend

A moderately large bouquet of still tight furled peonies and peony-tulips in hot red-pink. White rose and green spider chrysanthemum accents, plus assorted accent greens. Trader Joes flower department to the rescue, because all of the elements were purchased there and assembled into this form, and you can't GROW peonies in Deep South Louisiana, but my originally NorthEastern Mama loves them dearly. They're in her favorite vase, on her all table, reflected in her mirror. Sort of a nice still life, actually, if I could paint!
