I'm starting Goodbye to Berlin for the first time, and it has an introduction by Alan Cumming. I'm usually pretty detached from my feelings, but this certainly made me feel.

Chris met with a friend today who's been living in Japan for several years. He gave us these candies that are fascinating. Apparently made with honey, clear as glass, and just barely sweet. I can only describe the flavor as 'slightly warm'.

We went to the woods, and I spotted this guy like 30 ft from the parking lot. This is by far the best I've ever seen a wild owl, I couldn't believe it. We got to not-hear it fly away too! 🪶

It really made me have a lot of feelings about Haydee, too. Like, the original version of her story lands very differently from grandson-of-an-enslaved-woman Dumas, than it would from this guy.

It's still cool today so we went for another walk in the woods. I learned that autumn olive smells incredible and loud, that there are baby persimmon trees right on the path, and what this stupid grass is called--I've been wondering since I was a kid!

I really was impressed by how the artist used straight pieces of wood and created the illusion of softness and curves. Based on the number of people enjoying them, it's maybe the best public art I've seen.

Today I spent hours hiking around the woods looking for sculptures of trolls. The weather was cool enough even for me. The world's great, y'know?
