Congratulations to Dr Anna Russell who successfully got through her viva today with a thesis titled "Investigating the molecular mechanisms of action of anaerobic bacteria on prostate cancer development and progression". Super quick time. Thanks to examiners Gwyn Williams and Ben Evans.
Next we have Jade Manning, who won the runners-up prize for best talk at the Microbial Genomics ECR Symposium @Norwich. The talk was titled "Investigating the Mechanism of Action of Anaerobic Bacteria in the Pathogenesis of Aggressive Prostate Cancer". Congratulations.

Anastasios Bampalis had his PhD viva yesterday on a thesis titled "Investigating Bacteria In Poor Prognosis Prostate Cancer". He passed subject to minor corrections. Massive congratulations, Dr. Bampalis.

This seems odd. A cancer microbiome machine learning paper that uses data from the retracted Poore et al. 2020 Nature paper has been published just last week in mSystems. Some of the claims seem very strong. Also, it seems to have been accepted four days after submission. 🧬 & 🖥️ #microbiome

I had a great time at the ICGC prostate UK bioinformatics meeting last week based in the lovely St Andrews. Thanks to Andy Lynch for hosting (@dralynch) and the Isaac Newton Institute for funding.
This has been a long journey and I think it's the correct outcome. Thanks to everyone that has been involved, especially @abrahamgihawi.bsky.social who has been investigating this since his PhD days, and Steven Salzberg for really raising the analysis and awareness to another level. 🧬🖥️
