Happy 105th Birthday Frank Tolley! Frank flew operations as a bomb aimer with 625 Squadron. Aged 91, he raised money for charities through two zip-wire rides across the Manchester Ship Canal. You can hear an interview with him here: ibccdigitalarchive.omeka.net/collections/... "What a line-shoot".

A photo from the IBCC Digital Archive taken 19 July 1938 - Who knows what's going on? #History

Short S.20 seaplane ( G-ADHJ "Mercury") on land with hanger in the background. Several men are working on the port inner engine. On the reverse a newspaper cutting with headline '"Mercury" leaves Southampton for Atlantic flight today'. Describes plan to fly Mayo composite to Ireland from where it would make its trans Atlantic flight. This identifies the scene as Imperial Airways’ base at Southampton on 19 July 1938, the day the Mayo Composite flew to Foynes in Ireland for the commencement of Don Bennett’s world record transatlantic flight on 20/21 July in ‘Mercury’.

It's Lincoln's 1940s event this weekend. I think about the Second World War pretty much every day, and Mrs E is working so I'm staying home eating tinned snook and powdered egg with the lights off. Anyway, here's an aerial photo of Lincoln in July 1944. North is towards the bottom of the picture.

An aerial vertical photograph of Lincoln, England. Annotated 9 Job 3423 F/5 5/7/44 Jones. Sparse cloud cover. North is towards the bottom of the picture. The centre of the city is to the left of the photograph, showing residential areas. To the top is an industrial area mostly comprising railways and Foss Dyke flows into the Brayford pool from the centre-right. The top right of the photograph shows a railway curving around storage buildings. To the bottom are agricultural spaces, with farmlands compromising the majority of the right side of the photograph.

He became a member of the Guinea Pig Club after his Lancaster, ED545 was attacked by a Night fighter on the way to Peenemünde the following month. #History #WW2

His entry for the Peneemunde operation. He has written 'attacked by enemy fighter at 01:00 hrs. I was seriously wounded. Enemy A/C shot down. Excellent behaviour of crew. Returned safely to base."

I saw the Musical 'Operation Mincemeat' last night; one of the songs is about writing a fake love letter. This genuine letter in the IBCC Digital Archive has just been transcribed. Robert Greer flew operations as a pilot with 178 Squadron and was killed 22 March 1945. #History #WW2

A geography teacher in the Netherlands has just contacted me with the location of this photo in the IBCC Digital Archive of a Lancaster over a V1 site. It was taken 20 July, 1944 over the Le Hay V-1 launch site. The way they have geolocated it is wizard! #History #WW2 #geolocation

A full frame vertical aerial photograph of a Lancaster flying over a heavily bombed V-1 site. This is near the hamlet of Hameau de l’Hey, just south of Noordpeene village, 10 kilometres to the north-east of St. Omer.

A wartime story in four photos. Cyril Brooks flew operations as a flight engineer. He was shot down an interned in Sweden in January 1944. Returning to operations, he was killed 4 April 1945. The IBCC Digital Archive holds his diary. ibccdigitalarchive.omeka.net/collections/... #History #WW2

A new collection in to the IBCC Digital Archive today. Flight Lieutenant Eion Trevallion DFC flew a full tour of ops between May and August 44 as a gunner with 578 Squadron from RAF Burn. #History #WW2 #Archvies

I had a water fight with Grandsprog One this afternoon. We learned that conflict quickly escalates, that control of resources is crucial, and if you get water in the house Mrs E gets annoyed and deploys the hosepipe.

First shows right side, small holes in the skin except a large hole in the roundel. The reverse has RAF Horsham St Faith photographers stamp, captioned '425G Damaged aircraft 23 Jun 1941'.
