Finally got around to reading Why Fish Don't Exist. It was great!
It's funny looking back but i showed this clip to so many people in real life. 😆
Feeling Lazy, please wishlist my game. I worked very hard on it. (I also burnt out and didn't work on it for a year (whoops))
I found some footage of old itch builds. This was the environment we used for testing. The slums were vertically down a pit. I liked the idea of them being directly under the city. Yes, yes, "I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards".
Going back though old development footage is fun. I actually went and took a few weeks to learn Blender (i was and am still very bad at it). You can see how we also used to show the character sitting next to you in the cab. This got scrapped as we couldn't ever really make the perspective work.
I found the first little teaser trailer I made for Neon Express back when I was still making itch builds. It makes it feel like some sort of serious action game 😅
More Neon Express throwbacks! Here is the first time I got the terminal hooked up to the delivery system. I was very excited!
Another Neon Express throwback. This was the first time i thought the game might have legs. Flying between the skyscrapers felt so cool even in this little test enviroment.
Sum up your video game in one screenshot
I've spoken before about dropped mechanics in Neon Express. Originally, I wanted to be able to land anywhere and exit the vehicle. I spent no joke 2 weeks working on this. I had to implement a custom PID solution to ensure I could land on non-flat planes. I completely scrapped this mechanic.
Here is a throwback to late 2023 when i was messing with the idea for Neon Express. I had just got the delivery system working! Look how far its come 😭 store.steampowered.com/app/2952840/...
One night at like 2am I had a lot of fun adding these newsreel messages in the top of the cab. I wrote them all so long ago that i've forgotten most of them. Mostly its just set dressing, some of it is relevant to the story. All of them are very silly.
Making art is funny. You know enough about the medium to understand what you like, but can be years off being able to replicate it. It's even harder for games. Even seemingly small projects might still have several full time dev's working on it.
I've been super offline this year. It gave me a lot of time to think about how Neon Express doesn't have all the mechanics I originally intended it to have. But then I load the game up for the first time in a while and see the city moving and think its actually pretty tight.
I always loved diegetic menus in games. In Neon Express you are constantly using the terminal to accept new jobs. It even doubles as the start menu! Neon Express is done! But I've been very offline this year. Help me out by sharing and wishlisting on stream. store.steampowered.com/app/2952840/...
When you make your own video game you can put in the naughty words and no one can stop you!
The completed version of Neon Express has been uploaded to steam. Guess I should hit that release button at some point...
Another view of the downtown area I posted yesterday. This is were you make your first pickup. You can see wires, cars, pedestrians, signage etc.
Here is a shot over the city with an objective marker in the distance. You can see the subway some powerlines too.
This tunnel connects the main city to the slums. You go back and forth through it quite a bit throughout the story. It had a subway line, but now I added powerlines throughout it.
Gonna keep Neon Express posting. Placing these assets is time consuming but definitely worth it.
Here's the downtown region with some signs up.
If in doubt just add powerlines between buildings.
Been adding some decorations to Neon Express. Just gonna spruce up the city a little before release
How do I get YouTube to stop with this shit under kids videos
In response to the release of sliksong I have decided to do absolutely nothing. Neon Express will release when I feel like it. Probably should do that sometime.
Super earlier days but I've been attempting to make a majesty clone. I've got the basics for unit ai set up and I can place buildings from the buttons on the side.
Might muck around and make a sci fi Majesty
