"ICUs all over the country were empty." Tell that to the families who lost loved ones, to the exhausted healthcare workers who watched patients die day after day. Tell that to the cities forced to dig mass graves because morgues were overwhelmed. History doesn't change because someone rewrites it.
Progress happens when people work together. Honored to be part of the new International Society of Long COVID & Post-Acute Infection Syndromes (islc-pais.com). Together, we're advancing understanding, treatment, and prevention of post-infectious diseases through rigorous science. #LongCOVID #PAIS
Seeing is understanding. That's why we're working hard to build the next generation of biomedical imaging at @deeppiction.bsky.social. Because tomorrow's cures begin with seeing what was once invisible. #FluorescenceFriday #PrecisionMedicine
One more nail in the coffin of the "it's just deconditioning" hypothesis. 60 days of strict bed rest ≠ #LongCOVID or #MECFS. Rob's group shows that while exercise capacity may be similarly reduced, the underlying skeletal muscle biology is VERY different. Time to move beyond outdated assumptions.
Our review covering the major Neuroinflammatory events in Long Covid is finally online and open access here! www.nature.com/articles/s41... #NeuroCovid #LongCovid 🤓🧠
Excited to be serving on the International Abstract Committee for the 2026 ISLC-PAIS Conference in Amsterdam next month! If you have new findings on #LongCOVID, #MECFS, or #PAIS, don't miss the Late Breaking Abstract deadline on July 30. We'd love to see your work! islc-pais.org/abstract-sub...
This is not AI. This is real microscopy! 🔬 An intact gut, rendered transparent and imaged in 3D using light-sheet microscopy! 🤓 Looking inside organs to investigate where pathogens, immune cells, or disease processes may persist. More at: www.nature.com/articles/s41... Happy #FluorescenceFriday!
🧠 What if #LongCovid is, in part, a disorder of dopamine? Our new commentary explores how disrupted dopamine signaling may help explain fatigue, brain fog, and autonomic dysfunction, and what this could mean for future therapies. Open access link: shorturl.at/vLAfU
An intact human heart, rendered transparent. Because disease doesn't happen in 2D. Whole-organ tissue clearing and light-sheet microscopy reveal coronary vessels (magenta) and atherosclerotic plaques (gold) across the intact organ. More at: shorturl.at/iqTBh 🫀🔬 #FluorescenceFriday!
I had fun editing these videos 😎 Whole-body imaging is really opening new possibilities for biology. Seeing the whole picture changes the questions we can ask, and ultimately the discoveries we can make. Read more: 🔬 DISCO-seq www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... 🚀 LipiGo www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Biology was never meant to be studied in 2D. One of the coolest things about my new work is being able to visualize: 🧠 Neural circuits 🩸 Vascular networks 🎯 Drug biodistribution 🎗️ Disease progression Here's a small glimpse of what we're building at @deeppiction.bsky.social 🤩🔬 #3DImaging
As #HPV vaccine coverage continues to rise, cervical cancer deaths among young women plummeted. In the most highly vaccinated cohorts, deaths fell to ZERO. Among unvaccinated women, mortality rates barely changed. Vaccines save lives. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
A recent study by @zalaly.bsky.social shows a ~40% reduction in major cardiovascular events among >1 MILLION participants after vaccines. The findings suggest the SARS-CoV jab not only protects against infection but can also reduce #LongCOVID cardiovascular issues. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...
Not all brains age the same🧐🧠 Using whole-brain 3D imaging combined with spatial proteomics, @erturklab.bsky.social revealed multiple trajectories of cerebrovascular aging. A fascinating new study: biorxiv.org/content/10.6... I'm always excited to share great work from my colleagues! #Neuroscience
Great to see @virusesimmunity.bsky.social last paper highlighted at natrevimmunol.bsky.social. One of the strongest pieces of evidence yet for autoimmunity in #LongCOVID. Not proof that autoimmunity explains all neurological Long COVID, but it's getting harder to dismiss as one important mechanism.
And sadly these numbers are very conservative. They are back from 2024, when the ONS gave up monitoring 🙄.
2026 update: pig semen eye drops exist. GTA 6 still doesn't.
“If the cells are frequently turning over but there is still viral persistence, what other plausible explanations are there for this other than replication?” That's a very good question someone asked, let's do a thread about VIRAL PERSISTENCE in #LongCovid to cover this! (1/10)
Bad news: many kids under 8 never received the original Wuhan #COVID vaccines. Their immunity was shaped mostly by Omicron infections. New data suggest the "Cicada" variant (BA.3.2.2), now re-emerging in several countries, may be particularly good at evading those antibody responses.
Happy birthday to Michael J. Fox! His foundation invested more in #Parkinson research than the U.S. government itself. "Optimism is a political act." In a world full of uncertainty, setbacks, and reasons to give up, choosing optimism is an act of courage. Video: Too Young for this Sh*t Podcast
C'mon @wired.com, you have a chance to do better. Instead of amplifying pseudoscience, why not talk to the patients living with #LongCovid and the researchers studying its biology? Levinovitz is not a physician, neuroscientist, or virologist. His expertise is in religion. Try again!
The anatomical proximity and direct connection between the olfactory bulb and the orbital prefrontal cortex (OFC) make it a key neuroinvasion route for #COVID in the brain. In patients with #NeuroCovid, we observe thrombotic events, hypometabolism and atrophy in this region.
Happy to share that, after a prolonged peer-review process, our review on the major Neuroinflammatory events in #LongCovid was accepted for publication in Translational Psychiatry by @natureportfolio.nature.com! Coming out soon, but preprint available here: www.preprints.org/manuscript/2...
How it feels moving to a new country that you don't speak the language
Not all organs respond equally to #COVID infection. DISCO-seq, a new technique led by my talented friend @harsharanbhatia.bsky.social, combines 3D imaging and single-cell analysis to map Spike Protein tropism and found mostly in the liver, lungs, intestine & kidneys www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Is #LongCovid going away? Data show it is not. In a cohort study with 457.950 Covid cases, 1 in 6 patients developed Long Covid. Prevalence is 13-23% of US population, increasing 0.4%-1.5% every 3 months. Cases remained stable through 2022 but started to increase in late 2023.
My American kitties finally relaxing for the first time after realizing their Brazilian mom isn’t getting deported, she just escaped the U.S. and relocated the entire operation to Germany. 😎🐈⬛🐈⬛
