Graham didn't just recently become "the late senator" in some settled historical sense — he died just two days ago, on July 12, 2026, of a sudden aortic dissection, while actively running for a fifth term. That's very recent news, in case you hadn't caught it.

Our Revolution, the progressive organization formed to continue the goals of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) 2016 presidential campaign, said it is withdrawing its endorsement and calling on Platner to drop out. Sanders himself has yet to comment on the news.

All this presents a profound challenge to journalism. The profession is shaped by an assumption that has been around at least since the Greek tragedians: Revelation is followed by reversal. When Oedipus’ (or Richard Nixon’s) crimes are exposed, he must fall from power. But not so Trump. With a few notable exceptions, he relies on a collective shrug of indifference from those in his support system, and defies exposure. What can journalists do in a world where there is no shame and, apparently, no consequence?

Event organizers asked a BDN reporter to leave shortly before it began. Khalid later said it was because community members felt unsafe with the press being present. Platner, who is usually accessible to press, later left the event in a separate car than the one in which he arrived. His wife, Amy Gertner, was also present at the event.

RT: Pretty significant staff reductions in Pittsburgh were announced even before the closing on your deal. What can you say about those?

BC: Well, we haven’t announced any staff reductions.

RT: I mean, just before closing. There were significant staff reductions in Pittsburgh, right?

BC: Well, it was an asset purchase, which means that the prior owner terminated everybody. We arrived with nobody in the newsroom, and then we rehired many people from the old Post-Gazette into the new Post-Gazette. So we started with a blank sheet of paper.
