you need one of these. suet block. the tab on the bottom allows the woodpecker to use its tail to prop upright. makes it much easier for them. but be warned, squirrels will go to great lengths to get to it

though there are surprises i never expected. Such as a Cooper's hawk. i was upset at first but accept its the circle of life. there were no birds nor squirrels in my yard for about 2 weeks after this event

#birds to counter depression about the environment i put up a bird feeder. they can have short brutal lives but at least in my tiny corner i can give them respite. enjoyed it so much i added a 2nd for the woodpeckers, then a bird bath. now i've got squirrels that i can hand feed. #joy
