🧵 What is the minimum viable practice of functional analysis? — A brief primer from Knudsen (2010), with help from Claude... 1. What problem does this phenomenon, process, or finding solve? 2. What other phenomena solve this problem? 3. What new problem(s) emerge?

"Surprised by Method — Functional Method and Systems Theory" by Morten Knudsen in Forum: Qualitative Social Research. The abstract reads, "The paper is a contribution to the discussions on how to combine systems theory and empirical research. The paper focuses on functional method, which on the one hand is claimed as the method of systems theory but on the other hand is often only mentioned in passing—in Niklas LUHMANN's later works as well as in recent discussions on systems theory. The contention of the paper is that functional method can still be an important driving force in the development of interesting empirical problematics and analyses. The first and major part of the paper is a reconstruction of main characteristics of functional method. It is demonstrated how the method generates observations and the question is raised about which problem(s) the method is a solution to. The second part discusses functional method in relation to Niklas LUHMANN's later theoretical developments, especially the theory of second order observation. The overall aim of the paper is to reconstruct central traits of functional method in order to demonstrate how it works, what its function is—and where its limitations might lie."

rebounded from the LX3 issue with some Sigma DP1s/DP2x sample RAW edits today and oh my god I definitely get why people go through the trouble of shooting these cameras

Update: The LX3's aperture is stuck, just sent the message to the seller on my next steps 😭 Was lowk gaslighting myself thinking I just had a soft copy but diffraction was beating my ass instead

Lumix LX3 finally came in the mail! Ordered it from China so the 2 week delivery time was brutal (but on the faster end apparently 🤭). Editing the RAW files is a delicious challenge. They don't have as much dynamic range as the GF2 files. But the color science is on-point.

LX3 edited RAW photo of myself holding a gray-purple Cleveland sage. Additional foliage populates the periphery, set on a blue sky.
