in my early teens, someone important to me lost his father to mental illness. we began to spend lots of time listening to his dad's old records on a turntable in his bedroom. that's how i met steely dan. not long after, this dropped: fagen's self-described "death album". The Night Belongs to Mona…

Fagen is seated facing toward us in a chair next to a radiator in the corner of a room. he is looking down and slightly to our left, perhaps at the other corner, but it seems more of a thousand yard stare. he is pensive and his hands are folded. he is wearing a suit. the room appears dark and unlit from within, but sunlight is streaming in from a window to his right: just enough to illuminate him and the desk to his left as well as an ornate rug on the floor. underneath the rug, the floor bears a medium checkerboard pattern. the desk is filled with many items loosely arranged along the back against the wall: a desk lamp with a long articulated arm, cups that appear full of paintbrushes and other implements, a large glass paperweight, a thick book opened to its midpoint, a small tissue box, and many more items that are difficult to identify. there is a framed print hanging on the wall behind the desk, but the high contrast of shadows and glare on its surface render it difficult to make out. high above fagen's head, in white lettering is his name DONALD FAGEN, and on the wall behind him to his right the album title is printed vertically:

i cut my teeth on 90s christian music as a little kid, and kept it around for an occasional listen as i moved steadily away from the church, even through my atheist years. this album came to me during those, by way of a sibling. the first track hooked me with its *sound* and the album doesn't let up

been saying this for years, but. i really should finish the full album chiptune cover i started. "the golden age of microchips". i set out to learn chiptune by covering 30-60 seconds of every track, one per day non-stop. and most of airwaves was finished! saved it for last & called it "cathode rays"

look. this album came out the year i figured out that i'm trans. and not only is it titled The Great Awakening, but umm there's a huge egg on the cover? from the 1st words "here comes your heartattack" to the last words "start now"… the 1st time i heard Aqaba, i cried. "unbound, unholy, and free"

album artwork for The Great Awakening by Shearwater. a great number of animals appear to be marching in a circle around an egg that is larger than any of them. the floor is covered with sand. there is a gazelle, a hippo, a boar, a turtle, a camel, an ostrich, a zebra, a rhino, a bear, an elephant, a crocodile, and others that i can't quite make out because the whole scene appears to be taking place in the middle of a dust storm or sandstorm. in the distance there is a three-story tall stone wall filled with open, pointed archways. to the left there is a grand stone staircase leading to one of the archways on the third story. to the right of the frame, in the distance there can be seen what appears to be a city of stone, including a dome-topped building and an obelisk that might be a belltower given the barely visible opening near its top.

the only song anyone knows is She Blinded Me With Science and istg it's just about my least favorite song on this album. not saying it's a bad song either! Airwaves is perfection "be in my broadcast when this is over / i need a place to wait for morning"

the original UK "comic book" album artwork for The Golden Age of Wireless by Thomas Dolby. the word Wireless is printed in large red cursive script with a dramatic underline.
