📚 PETITION (Resonance Crystal Legacy, Book 1) | 2023 #SPFBO semi-finalist and #IndieInkAward winner. 👇 SUPPLICANT, the epic fantasy heist sequel, is out now!
But bc they've never actually DONE the work, they have no idea HOW it actually happens. They have some vague notions of WHAT valid "proof-of-work" might consist of and look like, but zero understanding of what's involved in the process or how any part of it feeds into the rest. Case in point:
Lecture 4: Here an example of what INTENT looks in action: preview.mailerlite.io/preview/2414... I've included 2 screenshots from my "issues log" for SUPPLICANT as well to be comprehensive. The close up gives you an idea of what I document in there; the zoomed out one shows you HOW MANY there are.
Lecture 3 is from my Dec 2023 newsletter, where I went into great depth on how I track and measure my progress for revisions: preview.mailerlite.io/emails/webvi... Not-spoilers: it involves a massive behemoth of a matrix in a spreadsheet and multiple trackers:
Can't tell by looking at the 2nd img of the Ellipsus Emboss post either, bc it relates to the other, "Public version history" feature, explained further here: help.ellipsus.com/article/embo... (more later; I still have thoughts on the "Total edits" & "Words-to-edit ratio" metrics)
We have no idea which bc this definition is super unclear. Since "Ellipsus automatically saves...your work" (help.ellipsus.com/article/my-c...), its version history is akin to GDocs: there's some set period for the autosave to fire, and timestamped snapshots show up as versions & grouped by days:
This is evident from the help docs for "View and restore past versions": help.ellipsus.com/article/view... Versioning generally—but not always—tends to be a reasonably reliable indicator in favour of human authorship bc previous drafts are kinda like timelapses for visual artists. However...
The help files also don't address saving, the closest articles are "My document is missing text" and "My changes aren't syncing". help.ellipsus.com/article/my-c... help.ellipsus.com/article/my-d... Btw step 1 in the official Ellipsus troubleshooting docs for sync issues is...COPY/PASTE 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
First off, how is "saved changes" being defined? When I manually hit "Save"? Because, as far as I can tell, there is no "Save" button in Ellipsus; it's a cloud-based writing app so everything is just automatically saved.
EXHIBIT C—the reply my piss poor internet connection almost ate ----- Meanwhile, actual human writers: "fuuuuck, this section doesn't work here." *cut/paste into prose graveyard* *time passes* "argh I gotta write a new section about—" 💡 ❗ 🤯 *copy/paste from prose graveyard* "HELL YEAH 🤘"
Exhibit A—and I'm not making this up, this shit literally just happened right now—you're trying to write a long 🧵 and your internet craps out. You get the dreaded "Unable to connect" error. And bc so many apps/sites are now vibe coded & crash happy, you COPY/PASTE your post so you don't lose it
Let's go to the good ol' privacy policy: ellipsus.com/privacy-policy I presume these metrics are being calculated based on "Information you provide" and "Information we collect automatically" sections, namely "Content you create" and "log and event information about the features you use"?
IDK where Ellipsus is getting their typical human benchmark of "30-70 wpm" from, but let me tell you what MY personal benchmark is for alpha drafting: 400 wph, a.k.a. 6.67 wpm (lol yes my metrics on my current WIP are absolutely dire; turns out drafting book 3 is worse than drafting book 2)
SUPPLICANT just about killed me. The alpha draft needed catastrophic revisions. Many of the blips are bc I didn't set up my tracker to account for words that I wrote, then deleted (by moving them to the prose graveyard), then later reinstated. Then deleted. Then reinstated. And rewrote. Again.
You want metrics? I'll give you my actual metrics. I started writing the alpha draft of PETITION on 1 November 2021 and typed "THE END" on 24 December 2021. I also vlogged it, so you can get the story behind the numbers here: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...
Metrics as per their help file: help.ellipsus.com/article/embo... The intent, per the same, is to provide “positive proof of human authorship” i.e. the prose equivalent of a time-lapse recording for visual art. Let’s go through them one by one and assess whether they’re fit for purpose.
Go to "Book catalog" > "AI settings" to get into the menu, then select "No" to "Enable Book Insights" to prevent them from automatically rolling out this new "feature". If you don't understand why gen AI recaps are bad, here's a quick rundown: preview.mailerlite.io/emails/webvi...
Wide authors, if you haven't logged into Google Play recently, do so ASAP. Like Amazon KDP and Kobo, they are also jamming in a stupid gen AI recaps "feature" on all books effective 6 July 2026. Unlike the other two, at least we can opt out of this shit. h/t @ajcalvin.bsky.social for the heads up

RYSERE'S GLORY is a prequel novelette set about ~20 years prior to the events of my RESONANCE CRYSTAL LEGACY series. I wrote it as a standalone intro to my other work. But if you've read book 1, it'll give you extra context for book 2, and if you've finished book 2, you'll be more clued in 🤭
My story, RYSERE’S GLORY, is about a postpartum woman desperately trying to get to her dying father because he needs her to assume his throne. Her enemies, however, would rather she & her infant heir perished on the voyage home. I wrote it bc we need more epic fantasies with mother protagonists 💙📚🪐
👀 ARC reviews for 🌟TOGETHER IS A DISTANT STAR are starting to come in. Here's what early readers are saying about our collaborative #indiesff #anthology... 💙📚🌎📚🪐
Without them, PETITION and many other #indiefantasybooks would’ve continued to languish in obscurity. MASSIVE THANK YOU to Steven for giving PETITION a shot, and for convincing countless others to add it to their TBRs. I’m so happy you had fun! Full review: www.goodreads.com/review/show/... 🧵4/6
Super interesting to see Steven TBR'd 8 of the 10 #SPFBO9 finalists. Talk about having your finger on the pulse! PETITION didn't get that far but this is awesome company. Steven’s passion inspired at least a dozen others to take up the first chapter challenge and post their live reactions... 🧵3/6
🎉 NEW MILESTONE UNLOCKED! 🎉 This latest review is very special to me, not only bc it marks a major milestone (50 reviews…whhhaaaaat?! ❤️) but bc it’s from Steven William Hannah, author of ICEBREAKER, originator of the brutal #firstchapterchallenge & #indiebook reviewer extraordinaire. 🧵1/6
She gets relegated to a footnote, if that. Rare are the stories with mothers who don't die; rarer still are the stories willing to wrestle with the all-too-confronting aspects of childbearing. Mothers have names and stories. It’s time one got her own epic. 👇 Here's a sneak peek at RYSERE'S GLORY:
TITLE REVEAL:【RYSERE’S GLORY】 Epic fantasy often centers birthright & succession, with plots that turn on marriage alliances: politicking, acts of conception, celebrations of birth, montages speeding through childhood until the Chosen One is ready to come of age & save the world. But the mother?

#indieauthors should not have to scramble for screenshots of notes from a PRIVATE Zoom call shared by an individual in a PRIVATE Fb group in Discords/DMs for key info. @draft2digital.bsky.social's YT channel has 12.k subs & regular livestreams. Why didn't your CEO immediately go live there? 🧵4/?
