Wow this friend of yours seems pretty cool. But for real, I really appreciate the way you talk about the relationship between audience, art, and artist. I always feel inspired to push myself more whenever I read your stuff. Phenomenal read as always.
If you had grown up thinking the thing on the left was bread, and were introduced to the thing on the right, which is also bread, how would you tell someone from your culture you wanted the thing on the right? Would you, perhaps, use a clarifying word from the people who made the thing on the right?
Also: I was reading this article on a voice call with Doc, and I told him "I find it interesting that you're opening up this article about something you love by listing your problems with it." And then the literal next paragraph I was hit with was this one. Doc called it a "called shot."
I went into this article because I always love Doc's work, but I stayed because I was fascinated to learn how Digimon had such a big effect on him as an artist. Having read this article, and having seen Doc's art, I can now see the connection. I kinda wanna give Digimon a shot now.
Phil Ochs - I Ain't Marching Anymore Another not punk album, but I was in the mood for something different today. This is an old favorite of mine. I really appreciate Phil's witty lyrics and his scathing commentary, but what makes his stuff work is his skill as a guitarist and his inviting voice.
Meet Me @ the Altar - past//present//future My complaints about pop punk earlier were in reference to this album. Yeah. The singer is good, and the music is decent, but it's all too sugary. "Positive" punk don't mean shit if it ain't got something to say, and this album says nothing.
The Muslims - Fuck these Fuckin' Fascists This album was really fun. The lead vocalist was great, the lyrics were politically charged and often made me laugh, and the instrumentals were spot on. It was a great ride, with some of the most in-your-face fuck-you energy I've heard in a while. Good shit
Against Me! ‐ Transgender Dysphoria Blues Holy shit. It's a fantastic album. It's got a great sound, Laura Jane Grace is a great singer. The line "Standing naked in front of that hotel bathroom mirror/In her dysphoria's reflection, she still saw her mother's son" fucking gutted me. Fuck, man.
Bikini Kill - Revolution Girl Style Now This album is really good. One thing I appreciate about punk is its willingness to tackle taboo topics without mincing words, and this album is a great example of that. No wonder they call it Riot Grrrl. Certainly makes me wanna smash the patriarchy.
Joey Valence & Brae - PUNK TACTICS Ok this is hip-hop, but it's got punk in the title so But seriously, this is a great album. The sound is brash and in your face, and the nonstop pop culture references are charming. Also there is some punk influence which is neat. I gotta check out more hip-hop.
Sum 41 - Underclass Hero Another really good one. The songs were great, and so were the themes. Apparently Sum 41 is classified as pop punk, which I'm not a fan of (lookin' at you Blink-182) but this avoids the shallowness of pop-punk with its sincerity and politically charged lyrics. Good shit.
Can't say I'm a fan of this format because I feel it leaves a LOT out, and doesn't give you the full picture. I hate picking just one favorite anything, but this is about as good as I could do I think. A decently representative sampling of my tastes.
This section I thought was really good. I'm a sucker for attention to detail and integrity in artistic depiction of the past. Billing yourself on that without doing any of that work is infuriating, ESPECIALLY if you end up perpetuating harmful tropes or stereotypes while claiming to be authentic.
