I just realized I have 103 alarms set on my phone - is it just me??? (Not active, just set.)
@robcrank68.bsky.social's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #SittingDownOnTheJob: Kauai, Hawaii: Feral hen (Moa Wahine) This chubby little hen looks like she is sitting down on the job, but if you look closely, you can see that she is actually sheltering her brood of baby chicks under her fluffy feathers:
@alan678.bsky.social’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #TantalisingTextures Reno, NV: Every morning, we put a basin of cool water out in the shade for the birds, & this morning, a young blue jay was the first to have a drink. The weathered brick & the pink Bee Blossom bush provide contrasting texture:
@alan678.bsky.social’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #SummerLovin: This Cooper’s Hawk took a break on our fence on a hot August day. We live at the top of a hill with a creek in the valley below, which is teeming with ground squirrels & rabbits, so it’s a favorite hunting ground for birds of prey.
@alan678.bsky.social's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ScreenFiller — a capture where the bird takes up a large part of the image. Waimea, Island of Hawaii: Grey Francolin, “Manu Moa." A small, earth-toned game bird native to South Asia that was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in 1959, as a game bird.
@robcrank68.bsky.social’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ButtShotts, any bird that is showing off it's rear. This feral Kauai hen got her skirt blown up by the frequently present Kauai breeze, and gave us a moon shot. Notice the racing stripes on her 5 little chicks:
Alan H @alan678.bsky.social’s #BirdOfTheDay theme: Alt #BirdsILove Birds you love to see. My favorite local birds are the quail - I love their "chicago" call & their perky behavior. These 3 babies were perched on a fence right outside my office window:
@robcrank68.bsky.social’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Orange American Robin: Reno, NV - Feb. Robin orange-breast? Many Robins overwinter in Reno, NV, where the winter is relatively mild, there are seeds & berries to eat, bird feeders & running water available. We sometimes see large flocks of them.
Beautiful! We also repainted with unconventional colors lately. In a neighborhood where every house is brown or gray - we did complimentary yellow & blue!
@alan678.bsky.social’s Alt #BirdoftheDay theme is: #peekaboo Poipu, Kauai: A Night Heron (ʻaukuʻu) was trying to swallow a whole fish & its flipping tail was hanging out of his mouth. When he noticed me watching him, he scurried behind a rock, peeking over the top, still trying to swallow the fish.
@robcrank68.bsky.social's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfJune26, whatever bird capture you deem your best from the month of June. These 2 rare owls are supposed to be keeping the pigeons off my roof, but most of the time they perch at my back door looking for a handout:
🌱 Zone 9b Yard Farmer 🥒🍅🍓🥬🥗 Today, I harvested a lot of lettuce, plus a little basil and cilantro. Because of the heat, the lettuce is starting to wind down, so I'm not sure if we will get any more. We are also picking tomatoes and strawberries every day:
Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme by @alan678.bsky.social is #LifelnTheBalance, birds captured in precarious or unexpected positions. Quail Mosh Pit at the bird feeder - Reno, NV:

🍽️🍜 Just home cooking Tonight, I made a Strawberry Brown Betty w/homegrown strawberries & it is so yummy! About a week ago, I made some strawberry bread, that was as a bland flop, (so I froze it for later use) but with the addition of some cinnamon sugar & butter is was delicious in the Brown Betty:
@robcrank68.bsky.social’s #birdoftheday theme is: When #ThursJay comes around it means that the #Corvids get time to shine. Steller's Jay, Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, Nevada:

@alan678.bsky.social's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BirdsInTheirElement California Quail: This time of year, we host lots of quail with spring babies. Recently, a pair of adults with a large family flew over our 6 foot fence. I was amazed when the tiny chicks cleared the fence as well!

The #BirdOfTheDay is #Raptors. This Red Tailed Hawk is perched right on top of our bird feeder. AKA - the hawk buffet:
California Wild Turkey: One of my most surprising bird encounters. My husband was in the hospital in Pleasanton, CA, (a San Francisco bedroom city) & after his surgery I went back to my room at the Marriott hotel & discovered this bold fellow cruising around the hotel! #birdofthday #outforawalk
#birdoftheday #black Great-Tailed Grackle: These birds are moving into the Las Vegas area. They are bigger than a crow and have a noisy exotic call.
Hawaiian Nene Their ancestors were Canadian Geese who were blown off course and ended up in Hawaii. It is the world's rarest goose - a protected species only found in the Hawaiian islands. Shot on Kauai.
I harvested some lettuce today & shared it with neighbors. Also picked up 2 varieties of cucumbers (Slicing Cucumbers & Armenian) & 2 varieties of basil (Thai & Sweet Basil) at Grocery Outlet. They usually have 4-6 big racks of brand name plant starts for half of what the big box stores charge!
