Pops of colour and a touch of whimsy at the Yarmouth Bar buoy wall. Never far from something nautical here in Nova Scotia.
This 1950 newspaper headline caught my attention today: “Acadian Utopia Crime-Free, Divorceless Village Plans 300th Birthday” (As seen at Le Village Historique Acadien de la Nouvelle-Écosse in Lower West Pubnico, Nova Scotia.)
Friday night light. Bidding a fond farewell to July in rural Nova Scotia.
Enjoyed Monday night golden hour light in the middle of nowhere Nova Scotia.
Saturday night wharf light in southwest Nova Scotia. Since childhood this has been one of my favourite sunset viewing platforms.
Damp days call for comfort food. I make giant rappie pies/râpure (a traditional Acadian dish with potatoes & chicken) so that we always have containers in the freezer. It may not look appetizing. But thawing then dumping it in a pan with butter & crisping it up is a favourite way to end a day.
Unbeknownst to me (until I finished my walk), today is World Snake Day.🐍 I haven’t seen a snake in 2+ years. Today of all days my son & I saw this specimen on the sidewalk headed to the riverbank on the other side. I grew up with family members who are terrified of snakes. I’m glad I’m not!
Stopping at this quaint hobbit hole set into a hill in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley has long been one of my favourite things. Got a Sungold cherry tomato plant & garlic scapes there today. But more importantly, I had a heartwarming chat with the LOTR lover overseeing it all. What a storyteller!
Pub patio light on a warm summer night. A great way to (briefly) escape the woes of the world.
Today’s trail discovery: Canadian Tiger Swallowtail (such a bright butterfly).
Thursday night patio light. There’s just something magical about sultry summer evenings.
Tuesday night light in the Shire! There is a backyard Canada Day party at a home on the other side of the river trail I was just on. The sounds of laughter and The Tragically Hip drifted my way on the warm summer breeze. 🇨🇦 What a magical way to say goodbye to June.
Today’s fun forest floor find: Pink Lady’s Slipper wild orchids. Native to Nova Scotia, I recently learned they have a symbiotic relationship with underground fungi. Always a delight to see!
Forest floor fungi find tonight. I stopped to admire the pops of colour, but did not touch them.
Today would’ve been my dad’s 85th birthday. Listening to the Irish Tenors in his honour. Always a slow driver, the one time he was pulled over for speeding was due to blasting the Tenors & not paying attention. Raised a glass of wine tonight (his fave) to reminisce. I miss his epic storytelling!
Monday night light. I stumbled upon a peaceful spot that looked like a magical portal to another world.
Peaceful Nova Scotia Sunday morning river reflections. In the trees the birds were singing, and in the distance church bells were ringing.
I had company on my walk tonight. This young deer let me stay incredibly close for quite some time to watch it feast on the surrounding greenery. It only bolted deep into the woods when a bike whizzed past us on the nearby path.
My backyard rhododendron is bringing me great joy tonight. I look forward to the beautiful bursts of colour every June. My peonies will soon be popping open too!
The view from here on my Sunday evening stroll. I always appreciate the ever changing forest light.
One of my friends is sporting these fantastic dumpster fire socks tonight as a nod to the current state of *gestures broadly at everything.*
A Tuesday night filled with trees and light. It was well worth veering off my usual path on this warm June evening.
I was searching my photos for something and stumbled upon this one from last July. This is a quick walk from where my mom lives, in a tiny Acadian village here in Nova Scotia where at least 3 generations of her maternal line grew up. Such a beautiful and peaceful place. Can't wait to visit again.
It’s lupin season here in Nova Scotia. The sight (and smell) of these wildflowers always transports me back to my childhood.
This winter, my husband accompanied me one day and snapped a photo as I greeted this particular tree. As you can see, it's a pretty impressive specimen. :)
