After 20 years of service, I am now retired from the U.S. Navy. What a long, strange, incredible journey it has been. After six years on active duty, I went on to serve an additional five years of full-time active duty across the next 14 years.

I am War.

I do not hate you.
That is the worst part.
I am not a beast with a grudge.
I am not thunder looking for a house.
I am a machine that learned to pray
in the language of gun oil.
I am the beautiful lie
with medals pinned to its chest.
I am the parade before the body bags.
I am the speech that shines like a blade
under bright lights.
I am the map spread open on a table
while somewhere
a boy is spread open in the dirt.
I make strangers of sons.
I take them laughing,
full of bread and music and bad jokes,
and return them quiet,
with winter living behind their eyes.
Or I do not return them at all.
I leave them in fields
where poppies bloom red enough
to make poets seem cruel.
I leave them beneath oceans
that keep secrets better than governments.
I leave them in pieces so small
their mothers must bury rumors.
I turn houses into mouths
that scream smoke.
I turn hospitals into questions.
I turn roads into veins
and fill them with people
carrying everything they used to call home
in one plastic bag.
I have watched a man
dig for his brother with a soup spoon.
I have watched a girl
draw her family in chalk

on the wall of a shelter
and leave space
for the dead to stand.
I have watched the moon
look down on a battlefield
and cover its face with clouds
like even God
needed darkness.

I am the inheritance

July's micro-RPG is Mechanica, alongside a short story set in the same world. In Mechanica, players are required to be evenly distributed between Pilots and the Mechs they guide. Mechs have their own minds after generations of battle. Can the two of you work together to defend Camp Severin?
