First, my condolences for watching that film. For good reason, a lot of modern fans have a big issue with Doc Savage's Crime College & the operations. It isn't a lobotomy, but a removal of the "crime gland" & a retraining of the criminals. Yes, I hear it, but it was a theory of the day.

If you'd like any recommendations, these are the books the Doc Savage discussion group, Flearun, chose to discuss last year. (The idea was at least one from each author, otherwise you probably wouldn't see a Donovan, Davis, or Bogart novel on the list.)
There are basically two "eras" of the Doc Savage pulps. When John Nanovic was Editor and after. When Nanovic left, Charles Moran moved Doc into the "scientific detective" years. (PS: Nanovic was also the editor for the Shadow for a few years.)
