Doctor Roo
@doctor-roo
A fan of a certain age, or a greying geek if you will. I grew up with and still love old-school Sci-Fi and Telefantasy from the 1960s and '70s (some of that newfangled '80s stuff too).
The Time Tunnel celebrates its 60th anniversary next month. But if you get MeTV and want to start celebrating early, Dr Tony Newman will be activating The Time Tunnel again at 4am Eastern / 3am Central early Sunday, 8/9, on MeTV (4am Pacific / 3am Mountain on the western feed). #TheTimeTunnel #MeTV
I suppose it’s possible the graphic was inspired by the test in Free for All. But whatever Channel 4’s designers were aiming for, they created an image that’s lodged in my subconscious for over forty years! #ThePrisoner #PatrickMcGoohan
This unnerving Channel 4 continuity card has haunted me since 1983. It's very Terry Gilliam-ish. I half expected McGoohan's eyes to start darting about, his jaw to drop open, and his head to bounce off his shoulders and chase Rover around the screen! #PatrickMcGoohan #ThePrisoner #Channel4
The beautiful Vitina Marcus played the green-skinned Athena, "The Girl from the Green Dimension" on Lost in Space. For The Time Tunnel story "Chase Through Time", Irwin Allen had her wearing gold face paint. #TheTimeTunnel #IrwinAllen #VitinaMarcus #JamesDarren #RetroSciFi
Happy 75th Birthday to LYNDA CARTER Still a wonder! #LyndaCarter #WonderWoman #DCcomics
Two things that sci-fi fans of my vintage used to do that are now obsolete. One was holding a microphone up to the television's speaker to record an episode of Doctor Who or Star Trek. The other was taking photographs of the telly. #RetroSciFi #Telepics #TheTimeTunnel #LeeMeriwether #JamesDarren
Happy 10th anniversary to Ghostbusters: Answer the Call! I adore Erin, Abby, Jillian and Patty. Happy birthday, ladies. #Ghostbusters
I was trying to think of my favourite Sam Neill performance. So many to choose from. He was such an amazingly gifted actor. For me, though, it's his performance as Merlin in the 1998 TV miniseries about the legendary wizard. It showcases his warmth, wit and quiet gravitas beautifully. R.I.P.
Fred Gwynne, aka Herman Munster, was born 100 years ago today. I've been a fan since the 1960s, when #TheMunsters followed Doctor Who on BBC1. Later this year, Munster, Go Home! celebrates its 60th anniversary, so I'll kill two mockingbirds with one stone and watch it today in tribute. #FredGwynne
Batty Birthday to Burt Ward, alias Robin, the Boy Wonder, who turns 81 today. Here he is on a selection of Batman bubble-gum cards from the 1960s that I used to collect when I was very, very young. #BurtWard #Batman66 #Robin #BubbleGumCards
Back in the 1960s, I had a limited supply of blue LEGO bricks. Those bricks alternated between being the TARDIS and Zero-X. I only had enough for one or the other, so, sadly, there were never any crossover adventures. #ZeroX #TV21 #GerryAnderson
I've been impressed by the way the internet seems to be rallying around Supergirl. It makes me wonder whether it's too late for the same thing to happen to 2016's #Ghostbusters. It breaks my heart that we never got more adventures with Erin, Abby, Jillian and Patty. I love these characters to bits.
Back in 1982, I'd just returned from Portmeirion when I turned on the TV and saw a trailer for ITV's Best of British season featuring The Prisoner. First thought: "What a coincidence!" My second: "Please don't let it be The Girl Who Was Death." Guess which episode they showed 44 years ago tonight.
Off to see the new Supergirl tomorrow. I remember going to see the original back in 1984. A young woman dressed as Supergirl ran past the ticket queue shouting, "Oh no! Averting that asteroid has made me late for the screening!" Alas, I enjoyed the publicity stunt more than the film. #Supergirl
Today marks the 60th anniversary of Dark Shadows. What began as a gothic soap opera about a young governess going to work for a strange family in the New England town of Collinsport slowly morphed into a wild ride featuring ghosts, witches, vampires, werewolves and time travel. #DarkShadows
Two thoughts: (1) That's the face I see in the mirror when I shave these days. (2) A sci-fi character I can still cosplay. #2001ASpaceOdyssey #RetroSciFi
These people appear in the opening credits of all 193 episodes of Night Court. Imagine discovering that you'd become part of the opening titles of a hit television series, even if only for a few seconds. I wonder if anyone has ever tracked them down and interviewed them. #NightCourt
50 years ago today, Logan's Run was released. Back in the 1970s, I owned a very truncated Super 8 version and used to show it to my friends on a projector. It proved remarkably popular thanks to one particular scene featuring Jenny Agutter. What can I say? We were schoolboys. #LogansRun #SciFi
Happy Bionic Birthday to Lindsay Wagner. Here she is, fifty years ago in June 1976, visiting the UK to promote The Bionic Woman. #BionicWoman #LindsayWagner #RetroSciFi
For all that I love sci-fi, I'm not really a special effects guy. I'm all about the story and the acting. But I must pay tribute to Brian Johnson, who, apart from all his other special fx work, created one of the most beautiful spacecraft ever to grace a TV screen: the Eagle from Space: 1999. R.I.P.
Sorry to hear that Anne Schedeen has passed away. She played Kate Tanner on ALF from 1986 to 1990. I haven't watched ALF in decades. It was one of those shows that seemed to be everywhere for a few years, then quietly shuffled off into television's attic. R.I.P., Anne Schedeen. #AnneSchedeen #ALF
It's another beautiful day in The Village. #ThePrisoner #PatrickMcGoohan #Portmeirion #RetroSciFi
Remembering Irwin Allen, who was born 110 years ago today. Here he is directing Don Marshall and Gary Conway on the set of the very first episode of Land of the Giants. The fact that the Spindrift crash-landed on the giant world on 12 June was a deliberate in-joke. #IrwinAllen #LandOfTheGiants
Not a good year for legacy Sci-Fi. #DoctorWho #StarTrek #StarGate #SaveTheGate
I love the regular characters, Tony, Doug, Ann, General Kirk and Ray every bit as much as the crew of the original Starship Enterprise. James Darren, Bob Colbert, Lee Meriwether, Whit Bissell and John Zaremba were fabulous in those roles. I'm also fond of recurring characters Sgt. Jiggs and Jerry.
Remembering the wonderful James Darren on what would have been his 90th birthday. For many fans, he's DS9's lounge-singing hologram Vic Fontaine. But to this 1960s kid, he’ll forever be my childhood hero, Dr Tony Newman, lost in the infinite corridors of The Time Tunnel. #JamesDarren #TheTimeTunnel
