Dr S was not just a bestseller but something of a pop cultural phenomenon of his time. Books, prints, tableware all featured the Dr on his adventures. I own a set of Dr Syntax plates much like this:

I appreciate your engaging on this issue and don’t want to litigate word choices all day. But using the word “error” also implies intent (good faith mistake), and Ellis is clear these guys were telling deliberate whoppers. This is the kind of thing that makes a lot of readers frustrated w the Times.
You found one reference to Bovino but Ellis’s 200+ page ruling is scathing throughout on the govt’s lack of credibility. NB “Defendants” in this case not just Bovino but Noem, DHS et al. See footnote as well as text here
