round badge, outer rim in gilt inscribed Derbyshire Royal Infirmary 1895. the inner disc is enamel - red cross on white backround. At the top of the badge is a crown. classic. Quite different to the later badge which has lots of shields ;)

Derby School of Nursing, central disc of green ename with a silver garland within which are two trees to the rear and a 'Derby' stag within a circular fence (more like a blob in the image, but I've seen it elsewhere. it's a stag). At the top of the disc is the 'royal shield': in red and blue enamel: top left and bottom right are the three lions (lying down) on red enamel; top right is the rampant lion (standing up) on red enamel; and bottom left is a harp on blue enamel.

Silver and red enamel cross with 'Memorial Hospital' incribed (silver on red) on the vertical bar and 'Darlington' on tthe horizontal bar. a square silver backing plate can tbe seen. A slender chain and pin is attached at the bottom of the badge, to be used as additional fastening.

Outer two layered rim, white enamel inscribed 'Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital Training School for Nurses. the inner disc has an elephant with a castle on it's back, with a sheild behind it (the left half of the sheild enamelled in red) emblem of Coventry over a blue scroll with the motto Camera Principis-The Princes Chamber - reputedly a reference to the Black Prince who held property in the area. Local Lore, who knew, though what it has to do with nursing I'm not sure... :)

Hanging from the bar is a round medal, the outer rim is red enamel inscribed 'The British Red Corss Societ'. In the centre is a shield, with white enamel and a red cross at the centre.

round gilt and dark red enamel badge. the outer rim inscribed 'Combines Hospitals Nursing School', an added scroll on the bottom is inscribed 'Newbury. The central disc is divided into three, the background being dark red enamel, the sillouettes being in gilt: left is the cadeus (staff with snake - this snake has a very good forked tongue sticking out and appears to be smiling), at the top is the 'lamp of learning' (aladdin oil lamp style) and to the right is a casle with three towers with flags flying - (the nearest has a triangular pennant, the other two rectangular flags, sillouettes) - this is the stylised interpretation of Newbury Castle which is used in the Newbury coat of arms and often seen in local iconography such as the icon for Newbury Town Council.
